New Kids on the Block w/ Natasha Bedingfield & Lady Gaga

Nokia Theatre @ LA Live 11/26/08

So on wed. Nov. 26 I faced Thanksgiving Eve traffic and headed to downtown LA to the Nokia Center for my first ever New Kids on the Block show. Some people gave me a lot of shit for going to this show, but I didn’t care. And to be honest it was one of the best shows I have ever gone to. I was a little worried that since I started listening to them 18 years ago and stopped 15 years that the music wouldn’t hold up, but it did. Surprisingly also I hadn’t forgotten a single lyric. Ah, the power of boy bands on impressionable young female minds. So needless to say, I was very, very excited.

Meeting me was my friend Anthony, and as we walked inside Nokia we noticed something… he was one of the only males in sight (but we decided since he is gay it was acc

eptable), and also, me in my black boots, black pants and black sweatshirt stood out like a sore thumb in the sea of pink and hearts appliqués. Also, I am not one to think all high and mighty of myself, but I am fairly certain I was the most attractive person there.

Oh yeh did I mention we had orchestra seating? Yeah, we were stoked.

The show had two openers, Lady GaGa and Natasha Bedingfield. The only thing really to note here is that Lady GaGa is who Christina Aguilera has been said to be ripping off lately both in appearance and performance, and after seeing her perform I have to agree. But this chick was hot and definitely made me wanna check her out.

So the boys were back in full force. Brothers Jonathan and Jordan Knight (I was and always will be a Jordan girl), Donnie Wahlberg (not to be confused with Marky Mark), Joey McIntyre (the baby of the group) and Danny Wood (most of us lovingly refer to him as monkey face). And they looked great! I am not entirely sure of their ages, but I know Jonathan is the oldest and he was celebrating his 40th birthday, so they range from mid 30s to 40. You can tell they all really worked overtime in the gym to get in shape for this tour. Donnie looked about 10 years younger than he looked in the Saw sequels he was in.

Jordan Knight (the heart throb) serenaded the audience shirtless during “Baby I Believe In You” (video below). If you listen closely you can hear my moaning and my friend say to me “Shannon did you just get a boner! You need a towel to wipe up that mess?!” haha.

We had a great view of the show and I really felt like a little girl again. I never could have imagined at 25 I would be at New Kids concert (paying almost $100 a ticket with service charges) and singing along to EVERY song. It was awesome.

Only 5 of the 22 songs they played were off their NEW NUMBER 1 album The Block, everything else was classic NKOTB. I was just ecstatic to see that for every classic song they busted out, their classic dances that went along with them were busted out as well.

The setlist:

* “My Favorite Girl”
* “(You Got It) The Right Stuff”
* “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time)”
* “Valentine Girl”
* “Please Don’t Go Girl”
“Grown Man”
* “Games”
* “If You Go Away”
“2 In the Morning”
“Dirty Dancing”
* “Tonight”
* “Baby I Believe in You”
* “Give It To You”
* “Stay the Same”
* “Cover Girl”
* “I’ll Be Lovin’ You (Forever)”
“Click, Click, Click”

* “Step By Step”
* “Hangin’ Tough”

* old songs

The three main players of the night were Jonathan (the heart throb hitting those high notes), Joey McIntyre (the young one who has gotten better looking and really should have a better solo career) and Donnie Wahlberg (the bad boy). Jonathan looked awkward and a little nervous and Danny just did some break dancing. But overall they all looked like they were having so much fun, and just laughing and playing with the audience. If they had taken themselves too seriously I would not have enjoyed the show as much as I did.

I was sad when it ended, but based on the reception they have been getting this entire tour (they even played the American Music Awards) I have no doubt that they will be back.
