Presidents of the United States of America – CUB Ballroom, Pullman, WA

Video and review by thenaturalstoner

Things got off on the wrong foot to start the Presidents of the United States show last night in Pullman, WA, with the lead singer of the PUSA calling me out before a note was even played!  He singled me out for being on a “phone” and “texting my mom”, when really I was filming video on my friends cam.  Of course I took this a little personal (as a swipe against concert filming), and let the band know how I felt during Lump, all in good fun of course.  Regardless, this was a dud evening.

“Were about pretty close to ready. There is one guy back there who is not ready, I can see him, he’s working on his phone or whatever. He’s not ready, he is texting his mom, I’m sure she is ready. It’s a rock show we’re going to rock your mom …”

Lump and my retort to the band

After seeing some video clips online, we purposely skipped the opening act This Providence.  From the WSU school newspaper report, we didn’t miss much as they apparently played a set too long for anyones liking.  A setbreak and half hour mechanical failure break later and the Presidents came out to roughly 800 people.

I am not a huge fan, so I don’t know the bands “non hits”, but the songs I knew were slightly nostalgic and cheesy at the same time.  Lots of younger kids (most of the crowd was 18-20 in this college town) seemed to have fun, but us slightly older concert vets know a snoozer when we see one. A few trips to Dupus Boomers for drinks mid set was a nice perk, but overall last night in Pullman, WA was fairly forgetful.

We stayed over an hour and then felt we had seen all that we needed to see.  Continuing our alcohol antics became much more of a priority and as a group we decided to leave before the set ended.  Looking back, this was a great decision.  Hopefully the next show I go to in this college town will be better.

Go Cougs.

  1. Wow you really know NOTHING about PUSA do you?

Hey man, appreciate the comment. And you are right, I am a total PUSA noob (saw one other show, a FREE show here in Pullman. Wish this one was free), and perhaps my approach could have been different. Perhaps.

However one thing I DO know, is myself and everyone I was with was bored as hell during this show, and you don’t joke about peoples mamas.

Maybe Caspar should stick with the kids library circuit?

If it makes you feel any better, you can read this fluff piece from a kid who apparently thought this was the best concert he has seen.

  3. Wow

First of all go cougs, and next, wow! You’re a total idiot, “continuing our alcohol antics became a higher priority”, we’ll never shed the stereotype with comments like that, but maybe you don’t want to. Typical coug anybody would say. It’s mindboggling to me how you couldnt find a Pusa show the most completely and totally awesome thing youve ever seen, theyre so overwhelmingly entertaining. Don’t take a stupid cell phone joke so personal, he was just trying to have fun with you, half the people in the damn joint are on their phones at any given time.

  4. If it wasn’t for your “Go Cougs” I wouldn’t even bother replying to your post. But since you appear to be a Coug, I’ll set ya straight.

You are calling me the “total idiot”, however if you believe me posting vids and comments about a shitty show the SEB put on is going to have any external effect on WSU’s Party School image you are f’n nuts. WSU has been a party school since before I (and I assume you) were even alive. My (or ANYONES) drinking at any concert really shouldn’t be out of the ordinary, unless you were home schooled, beaten as a kid, or don’t like having fun. Especially in Pullman freaking Washington of all towns.

Since you appear to be a legit Coug fan, concerned about WSU’s image, I will be nice and spell it out for you. WSU will change its public image via projects like the $51MM School of Global Animal Health Gates/Allen grants, increasing its academic standings related to other peer AAU institutions, continuing advancements in biofuel, plant science and clean tech fields, and by winning some god damn football games.

The fact is this town of 27,000, with 24,000 students aged 18-22, IS a party town. Like it or not. What do you expect these young kids to do all day and night, hang out in the CUB or at the REC Center and eat pretzels? Get real. These kids are getting drunk, getting high, and getting laid. That’s what happens in college towns and that’s certainly what happens here.

And I wasn’t the only one who thought the show blew balls, check out the comment on this post from a fan that has seen them many times: http://pusabase.com/wordpress/?p=1152#comments Post #4.

Thanks for the comments, I hope you enjoy other Palouse area concert reviews on this site. Feel free to post some of your own!
