Les Schwab Amphitheater – Bend, OR

July 2nd, 2011, there was a meeting of the minds from the great states of OR, WA, and ID and they all gathered in Bend, OR. Their sole purpose was to make Bend their bitch and own that town as if it were theirs. Oh and they also came to see the band with an awesome sound… Ween. The weather was perfect and having the Les Schwab Amphitheater as the venue, made for a phenomenal show. The day started out with a nice long hike inside a lava tube, which is something I like to do every time I go to Bend. Once we got our exercise done for the day, it was time for a power nap or a dip in the pool, depending on how much fun was had the night before. After some quick zzzzz’s, it was prefunk time!
We had a nice walk to the venue and then staked our spots early before the show started. When the boys hit the stage, you could tell right then that the shithawks had left the sky and that all would be good! Transdermal Celebration was the opener, which I had called out weeks before and at that time my nuts finally dropped and I went from a boy and became a man. I was ecstatic to say the least. After I got such a tasty opener, I pulled out the camera to start my collection of videos and pics to share with my readers. The second song of the set was Don’t Get Too Close to My Fantasy, which rocked many people’s socks off. The big hitters just kept coming with no sign of slowing down such as, Take Me Away, Even if You Don’t, and Bananas and Blow!
When Geaner came out with a bullhorn, he blessed the fortunate concert attendees with Poopship Destroyer, which was the bee’s knee of the night for many Ween fans. The show just kept getting better like a snowball turning into an avalanche. Monique the Freak, The Mollusk, Mutilated Lips, and Birthday Boy were other gems bestowed upon us that wonderful evening. They boys even covered David Bowie’s Let’s Dance! The band sounded great and Gene looked healthier than last time I saw him live in Bend. Deaner busted out a sweet acoustic guitar with a Boognish on it and I was in awe. You Fucked Up was another rocking song that made my night and helped me relate to some current shit I am dealing with in my own personal life.
The show ended with a smoking’ triple encore! The HIV song was the first to come, which was hilarious since my crew stayed at the Rainbow Motel the night before. The showed ended up closing with Spinal Meningitis Got Me Down and Roses are Free, both which were awesome in their own ways. The showed ended at about 10:30 pm and we had plenty of time to have a nice walk back to the motel and grab some grub on the way. What a night! The concert and the day overall for the whole crew was more than satisfactory.
The venue was great and had plenty of grass to lounge on. It was very easy to walk up close on the floor, even during the show. The security was really laxed other than for people who snuck in outside alcohol. Cameras were allowed, which is always a bonus, so I don’t have to sneak my camera inside to get my readers the photos and videos that they deserve. The crowd was awesome, but what else would you expect from Ween fans??? The band was on fire and I am so happy to see them having fun on stage. The day can be summed up in one word, fan-fucking-Ween-tastic!!!
