Sebastian Bach we all know the name from the days when Skid Row ruled the world (and perhaps girls of a certain age remember him from the hit TV show Gilmore Girls). I have never seen Sebastian Bach or Skid Row  perform live but I remember the hits like “ I Remember You” like it was yesterday . This show was another free concert as my friend and I got free tickets when we were at Pops two weeks ago. One of the manager’s for an opener asked if we wanted to go, how could we turn him down? As usual we got down to Pop’s early enough that we were the only ones in the parking lot. Seriously I don’t think I’ve ever gotten to Pops when there is someone else there, I’m usually always the first one as I want to be in the first row. So we started to stand in line around 4:30pm when Security came out and moved us back away from the door. Needless to say before the doors opened at 7pm the line was strung through the parking lot and around vehicles so there was a solid turn out for the Sebastian Bach show.

While standing in line my friend Cheri and I, discussed where we wanted to be as the presence of drunk people behind us in line, had us second guessing our spots. Knowing Pop’s has a nice balcony it was decided that we would head up there and get front balcony for the show. Once the doors opened we managed to get two seats almost center to the stage, where Cheri could video tape and I could test out my other angle of photos, and see if that would make a difference. We got our spot which was located underneath an air conditioner vent, you can imagine we nearly froze the whole time (unexpected for the Midwest in July), but enjoyed the show none the less.

Sebastian Bach took the stage at 10pm, and opened up with the head banging “Slave to the Grind.” It was outstanding as Bach was microphone swinging and head banging through the entire song. He sounded great, had the slight echo going through the mic when he finished a song, but that’s to be expected, it is Sebastian Bach for crying out loud. “Slave to the Grind” was awesome, although I kept on singing “Halstorms” version of it in my head, as they did remake the song on an EP earlier in the year, still Bach owned it.

He automatically continued into the next song, “Kicking and Screaming” without slowing down. I did notice his adorable little guitar player, Nick Sterling a young guy in his early 20′s yes I’m attracted to younger guys, he was adorable. In fact I almost thought it could be Bach’s son, but as the show progressed I realized it wasn’t but he could play that guitar beautifully and I thought was the highlight of the show, but that’s just me.

Set list below:

  1. Slave to the Grind
  2. Kicking and Screaming
  3. Dirty Power
  4. Here I am
  5. Big Guns
  6. (Love is) a Bitchslap
  7. Stuck Inside
  8. Piece of Me
  9. 18 and Life
  10. American Metalhead
  11. As Long as I got the Music
  12. Monkey Business
  13. My own Worst Enemy
  14. I’m alive
  15. I Remember you
  16. Tunnel Vision
  17. Youth gone wild

As you can see the set list had major Skid Row songs on it, and “Tunnel Vision” which he stated was wrote with John 5 from Rob Zombie. The highlight of the show was during “Youth Gone Wild” as Sebastian started the song and got into the first chorus a kid came running up on stage from the side and started head banging and dancing around. You could see Nick’s face like what the heck, he quickly got tackled and taken out by the security guards, he was in the crowd earlier and was head banging to the opening bands, he did really make it be “Youth gone Wild”, it was a great ending to a awesome concert.

Sebastian Bach had two opening bands, Conquest, and Divine Sorrow. I could have done without Conquest they weren’t very good. Your basic  hair band where the lead singer resembled Bret Micheal’s. Divine Sorrow on the other hand is a good little band, sort of a cross between Metallica and Creed, they had tons of family and friends there, and put on a great set.

Sebastian did mention “Sauget” a lot, as that is the town were Pop’s is located, but did also say that Pops sold out, and that was awesome considering everything going on in St. Louis over the weekend Pop’s managed to sell out for Bach, and as usual put on a great show, I love Pop’s so I can’t say anything bad about a venue that I frequent at least three or four times a year, a great night had by all.

I hadn’t been to Pops in a long time but a buddy of mine from work got some tickets from Divine Sorrow to go to the show. I was interested in seeing Bach mostly as I am a huge Skid Row fan. Overall had a really good time. The comments below seem pretty negative about the event but I felt it was put on very well. I can see why people may not have liked the sound of the 2nd band (Divine sorrow) as it was a different type of music than Bach and Conquest but for me it really stole the show. Having played a couple of shows in my lifetime I can saying that being one of the bands in the middle of a show really sucks as you have to hurry to set up after the previous band is done, and break down ASAP after you are done. I noticed Divine Sorrow was the only one who brought a crew of people for set up and helped both bands load and unload gear. That was cool. I met a lot of the guys and got some autographs after the show which was cool too. I thought Bach’s performance could have been a little better but I guess I was still hoping it was like the Skid Row days. They had a real young kid, (looks like he may have been 18) playing guitar and he was very good! Glad to see younger people still interested in this type of music. My friend from work says that Conquest and Divine sorrow have another show coming up on 8-4-12 in Robertsville, MO for a charity event which looks like a good time.

Shawn…as I respect your opinion as it is yours you also have to respect the others.  I know first hand the guys in Conquest not only work “real” jobs but make a very comfortable six figure income. They play for the love of the music….as any true artist should. If they are in it for just the money…hope that works out for them. . Also sounds like you have made money working for these washed up rockers like Bach. I hope DS does well for themselves….does not mean I have to like or listen. and my opinion like yours…is just that mine.

Oh, so now we’re talking about me getting sat on? Please, if I was scared I would’ve used a fake name. All I’m trying to say here is this review pissed me off. This show was for Metal!!! I can’t tell you how many of my friends and people that I knew were saying “what the hell is this…” It was basically the international smoke break for Pop’s xD You have to watch what the crowd does. I noticed allot more people standing up and cheering for Conquest than for Devine Sorrow an I’ll tell you why. People that came to see Devine Sorrow; 50-75% of them also liked Conquest. People that came to see Conquest; >25% also liked Devine Sorrow and the ones who were still there were only still there bearing the noise to reserve their tables to watch Bach. Oh, one more thing, did my eyes deceive me because I clearly noticed the Singer of Devine Sorrow rocking a keg between himself and his bass. I can only hope he invest in some strap locks before he looks goofy in front of a bigger crowd.

Wow Joey were we at the same show conquest sucked!!!! The Divine Sorrow band sounded great and that was the first time I had seen them Bach was Bach what ever. I do have to say u talk a lot of shit behind a key board I would like to know when u play the big stage at pop’s so I can come right a review on your band someone that talks that much shit must be making millions in the music biz!! To write a review is one thing but to talk shit about a person is another thing and I would bet that “fat front man” would kick your ass!!!

    you
people are idiots, you have never been to a decent show, bach is washed up and
conquest is a good cover band, i have worked red hot chili peppers, toys in the
attic, bach when he was with skid row, the great blues band savoy brown, scorpions,
iron maiden, van halen, rush, kiss, motley crue, Billy idol, cinderella, queens
ryche, white lion, ac/dc, bonjovi, ratt, nickelback,U2 and the list goes on the
main thing they had going for them is they were reltively new and or they had
some new music that everyone wants to hear, not some damn screaming out of key
and cover tunes, you boys act like you just paid 150 a seat at Busch stadium
and your unhappy with the song list, it was a low cost to free show with only
one band that had new music that is being picked up by the local rock station
k-she 95 and they are getting national exposure, try getting a copy of the CD
and listening to it a few times, maybe you will get it..

  • Shawnm

    these
2 must had been at a different show, first of all Divine sorrow has only been
together for a year and its all original music, no cover tunes (conquest) and
they are a little more seasoned in age and have a lot of time collectively
playing music, and by the way if it wasn’t for DS, getting tickets out in the
area it would be you 2 morons and all of us watching the show.. get this other
thing straight they may have what seems to be Christianity overtones, but its
to make the shallow people (you two) try to figure out what their about, and
lets talk about Sebastian Bach for a minute, here he is 20+ years later playing
small venues, I worked back stage security for one of his shows twenty years
ago when he couldn’t keep his clothes on between the dressing room and the
front of the stage like some pervert in heat, he still sounds like someone is
straggling a cat and is still as egotistical as ever… DS, has real lives and
they make real livings and will shortly be able quit there day jobs, while
conquest and Bach will be riding around in a bus remembering the old days
playing small revenues because they cant write anything new that anyone really
wants to hear, and by the way DS opens up for Kansas, April wine and Boston in
august, ever hear of them?. let us know were your band is this weekend so we
can come out and provide a review.

I agree with the other two responses! That Divine Sorrow was almost enough to make me vomit! I despise any band that even makes me think of such lame acts like Creed! If I wanted religious type rock, I would visit a church for christian crap rock. I do not want to go to a decent rock concert and have crap like that to have to sit through while waiting to hear some good music!

  • Vetangel2

Conquest in my opinion…was the better of the opening band. Divine Sorrow was too “grunge” sounding and was boring as watching paint dry. But I do give them credit for playing as I support all live music. Joey, I am afraid your comment rings very true. Conquest was not selling any merch…..Derrick the lead singer simply threw them out for free to a very pumped crowd. Thank you Pop’s for always bringing some awesome music in a cool venue m/ m/

  • Joey Mö F’n Skar

Sorry to say but out of the two cover bands Conquest rocked it. Jamie B was in the crowd, not on stage; if the lead singer reminded me of anyone image wise it was early James Hetfield. Conquest isn’t “Hair” they’re thrash metal and pretty damn heavy at that. If anyone should’ve started out the show it should’ve been Devine Sorrow. I never heard any Metallica likeness in their music but you sure got one description right… Creed! They sounded like Tool and Creed had a stillborn baby that was brought back to life by an adrenaline shot and a defibrillator. Absolutely awful stage presence and not to mention the fat, goofy front man who dropped his bass to the ground right before they were going to start a song and then he sat up there screaming “fuck it, blah blah blah” while trying to be a “Christian band” hypocritical stereotypes they were. At least Conquest can get a damn crowd hyped but don’t worry I know it’s not your fault, if I sucked that bad I’d shoot a few bucks to an editor to make me sound great too.
