If you haven’t caught on to the Matt and Kim movement yet, you are missing out. The duo is currently on tour with Passion Pit, and in my opinion, outperformed them recently in Salt Lake City(03/02/13). Matt and Kim opened their night by doing a little Harlem Shake for us. It didn’t take long to see that the crowd was overly excited to start the night. This was a sold out show, and tiny hipsters were everywhere.
From the very first beat, the show was moving at an insane pace. Matt and Kim don’t just play music. You can actually see it forming in the air around them and collecting in the room as they “play”; more like blast through their tunes. Kim, well, she’s an animal. From standing on her drums, directing with her sitcks like a conductor, and even making jokes about her bra, Kim makes the duo fun and beautiful. During the set, a deal was made with the audience that she would play a whole song with her shirt off if the crowd would wave theirs above their heads. Deal delivered.
Kim also performed a pretty amazing concert stunt in this day and age. While Matt explained why she was putting on an air cast, he also instructed the crowd to snuggle up and hold Kim as she walked out onto the crowd and “shook her ass” in their face. Honestly, this is risky, a little punk rock, and still an awesome novelty. Good on you Kim. Aside from being a showman, she is also a balls-to-the-wall drummer. She never seems to miss a beat, and I giggled at the giant sandbag needed to hold her set-up in place.
Matt is both the comedic emcee and vocal leader. He jumps around, gets up on the keyboard bench, and is just as wild as Kim. He introduced her as his partner in music and sex, and when you think about it, how could that life be anymore fun? Matt was certainly blown away at the amount of people who showed up that night, and he did promise that they would never skip Salt Lake again. I’m holding you to that Matt.
Of course, tunes played included “Daylight” “Good Ol’ Fashion Nightmare” and the new and energetic “Let’s Go”. If you get an opportunity to see this duo live, you should take it. It might be the most energetic and legal fun you can have. I have not been disappointed at a Matt and Kim show, and I don’t see how you could be. You better believe that the next time I’m running a few miles, I’ll be trying to keep up with the pace of these two in my ears. Check out their new album, Lightning.
Please enjoy the photos I took.
