The 5th annual Golden Gods Awards hit the Club Nokia in Los Angeles on May 2nd. This was an award show specifically for rock and metal alike. Basically what the Grammys should be, but aren’t. This was my 1st time attending an awards show so it was definitely interesting and something new. The show was dedicated to Slayer co-founder and guitarist Jeff Hanneman that had passed away earlier that day.
There were lots of surprises this night as well as the awards themselves. There were guest appearances and all-star jams. The award show itself was hosted by WWE Superstar, Chris Jericho. Throughout the night musicians of both rock and metal were presenting awards for their respective winners. The awards were rewarded to:
Album of the Year: Deftones, “Koi No Yokan”
Best Guitarist: John 5 of Rob Zombie
Best Drummer: Arejay Hale of Halestorm
Paul Grey Best Bassist : Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead
Best Vocalist: Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour
Song of the Year: Black Veil Brides “In The End”
Best Live Band: Slipknot
Best New Talent: Device
Most Metal Athlete: WWE Superstar Triple H
Comeback of the Year: Tenacious D
Most Dedicated Fans: HIM
Aside from the awards, there were also all-star jams which included: Anthrax and Phil Anselmo(Down/ex-Pantera)/Rex Brown(ex-Pantera) doing a cover of Pantera’s “This Love”, Halestorm and David Draiman(Device/Disturbed) doing a cover of Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love, Stone Sour and 2 other members of Slipknot doing a cover of Black Sabbath’s Children of the Grave, Five Finger Death Punch and Rob Zombie/John 5 doing a cover of Rob Zombie’s Thunder Kiss ’65, and Metallica and the metal god Rob Halford(Judas Priest) doing a cover of Judas Priest’s Rapid Fire.
There were some mishaps which made the show interesting. In some cases, the envelope containing the winner was empty so it was awkward waiting for the winner to be announced. When Black Veil Brides won the award for Song of the Year, everyone in the building booed them. BVB was not pleased with that and started to diss us in multiple ways that was shameful to the metal community, themselves, and their “fans”.
The lineup for the bands were: Metallica, Danzig and Doyle, Anthrax, Five Finger Death Punch, Stone Sour, Halestorm, and The Dillinger Escape Plan. The bands were the highlight for me since that’s what I mainly went for. This award show was awesome, and if all goes well I hope to go to next year’s too.
