We are just weeks away from the 8th Annual Yonder Mountain String Band Harvest Music Festival taking place at the most beautiful festival site I have ever stepped foot on, Mulberry Mountain. While Mulberry Mountain has now become the home to three total major music festivals, Harvest Festival still stands out as “THE” festival for many folks. Harvest keeps the crowd size limited and far more intimate than the larger Wakarusa Music Festival and the newly formed Thunder on the Mountain country music festivals. Attendance at the Harvest Music Festival usually caps out around 8000. Plus instead of covering up the beautiful main stage with a rented stage, you actually get to watch your headliners play on this stage!

Another great aspect of the Harvest Festival is that the Yonder Mountain String Band are the official hosts each year, and the lineup stays a little tighter than the eclectic mix at Wakarusa with pretty much all bluegrass, Americana and folk music taking the reigns. There are a few fantastic exceptions such as Beats Antique and the Mike Dillon Band (DO NOT MISS THE MIKE DILLON BAND!) This year also features the return of Les Claypool to Mulberry Mountain… his third trip to the Mountain with his third different project. Previously he has appeared at Wakarusa with Primus and also just as Les Claypool. This time he is bringing along Les Claypool’s Duo de Twang, a project that I am incredibly excited to see first hand. Check out the video below for a taste of twangy Claypool.

Be sure not to miss the Everyone Orchestra, conducted by Matt Butler and featuring Al Schnier of moe., Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain String Band, Tim Carbone and Andy Goessling of Railroad Earth, Dango Rose, Bridget Law and Bonnie Paine of Elephant Revival, Isayah Warford and Mike Dillon and Carly Meyers of Mike Dillon Band.

Other acts rounding out the 2013 lineup include: JJ Grey and MoFro, Kasey Musgraves, Justin Townes Earle, Greensky Bluegrass, Dirtfoot, Steep Canyon Rangers, Gangstagrass, Hot Buttered Rum, Dehli 2 Dublin, Darrel Scott and Tim O’Brien, Hot Club of Cowtown, Ha Ha Tonka, Andy Frasco and the U.N. and many many others!

Be sure to check out some of the other great events taking place at the Harvest Music Festival such as the Fiddlin’ and Pickin’ Contest… where you can take home a basket full of SWAG and a cash prize. At 9AM on Saturday morning, be sure to check out the Chompdown… a communal breakfast ran completely by the festival patrons that has become tradition for all Harvest Music Festivals and Wakarusa Festivals where you can munch on some good eats while watching Dirtfoot and Friends perform a stripped down set in the campground.
