Nine Inch Nails 14

For a Tuesday night at the start of winter in Spokane, Washington, tonight ended up being about as good as it can get.  A smaller than expected “sold-out” crowd (much smaller, maybe 2,500 to 3,000 people) made their way to the Spokane Arena through decent weather to see two really great bands play 3 hours of music.

Starting promptly at 7:30, Explosions in the Sky came out and did their thing to perfection.  The ups and downs of their guitar jams really get me excited, and tonight they were on point.  Keeping the fans interested from beginning to end, the guys from Austin played an almost hour set that lived up to my expectations.  I had seen them once before at the Gorge, and was hoping they could repeat that prior energy tonight.  From the floor of the Spokane Arena there was no doubt that they were up to the task.

After a pretty standard set break, Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails came out at just before 9pm and started the night off with ‘Copy of A’ off their latest album Hesitation Marks.  Good enough for me, and the 2,500 others here tonight.  The Slip’s ‘1,000,000’ followed, and then they brought out some old stuff.  ‘Terrible Lie’, ‘March of the Pigs’ and ‘Piggy’ were next and everyone was relishing the moment.  Nine Inch Nails was rocking our faces off, quite well.

The band wound up kicking our collective asses for two full hours, with a set culminating in the amazing fan favorites ‘Wish’, ‘The Hand that Feeds’ and ‘Head Like a Hole’.

Closing the night with a big five song encore was a perfect ending, no ‘Closer’ be damned.  Sending Spokane home with a beautiful rendition of ‘Hurt’ that began with an eerily quiet Spokane Arena and closed with intense feedback blasting through the speakers as the band exited the stage was quite a sight.  I am so happy everything worked out and we were able to experience this awesome show tonight.  Will definitely go back to see Trent and Co. again.  Go Cougs!
