Newport Music Hall: Columbus, OH

Newport Music Hall is located in a prime area across from the Ohio State University. Sure there may be new food chains like a Chipotle on one side and a Red Robin Burger joint on the other but the Newport Music Hall is an old classic. It features high ceilings, a balcony, and great acoustics. It actually reminds me of the Congress Theater in Chicago. When you add the smell of weed inside the venue, it makes for a great atmosphere for a show featuring some up and coming rock acts.

The anticipation for The Pretty Reckless was pretty high in Columbus Ohio Saturday night. Taylor Momsen & band never disappoint when it comes to giving the crowd a great rock show, her singing voice came across with depth and growl as she belted out the bands hits. The shoe began with an opening band from Nashville called Hollywood Kill. The band consisted of four guys that played a variety of tunes, anywhere from the Inspector Gadget theme, (yes they did do that) to heavy guitar riffs. The band sounded great. Having announced from the stage that they were looking for a place to crash on this Saturday night, I sure hope someone took them in.

If you have never seen The Pretty Reckless in concert be prepared for a skimpy dressed long haired blonde chick to blow you away. Taylor’s choice of clothing leaves little to the imagination, but her singing leaves you wondering how did she do that?!?!?! The group started the crowd off with the hits, “Make Me Wanna Die”, “Going Down” and “Miss Nothing”, before doing an excellent job on a cover.

That cover happened to be “Aeriels” by System of the Down. According the Momsen, System of a Down is one of her favorite bands. The cover sounded amazing, her voice fit the song perfectly, with the help of lead guitarist Ben Phillips who can pretty much do anything on the guitar. Phillips is also an excellent backup singer as him and Momsen sang together for a new song called “Cold Blooded” off of their recent EP Hit Me Like A Man.

Overall it was an excellent concert the crowd was really into it. An added bonus was the band taking time for a meet and greet before the show putting everyone in the mood to rock. It was another great Saturday night, had a blast with two friends that I had meant at a Pretty Reckless concert last year. This only added to the fun experience as they were huge fans and one of them even wrestled for a t-shirt that Phillips had tossed into the crowd. A brutal match, but my pal came away with the shirt and we all left Columbus thrilled to have experienced a killer rock show.
