The grindcore/death metal legends Cannibal Corpse and Napalm Death teamed up for this year’s Decibel Magazine tour. It was a sold-out night at The Observatory in Santa Ana, California and fans of both bands came out to completely destroy the venue and each other!
Napalm Death started off the night strong with the intro track called “Multinational Corporations: off of their debut album, “Scum” which is one of the most influential grindcore albums and continued with “Everyday Pox”, a song from their new album called “Utilitarian”.
This was only the 2nd time I’ve seen them so I knew more or less what to expect. Barney’s vocals were difficult to understand since he has that deep growling voice, but seeing him run around and act like a crazy man is always entertaining.Throughout the night they played hits from various albums such as “From Enslavement To Obliteration”,
“Suffer The Children”, a Dead Kennedys cover of “Nazi Punks Fuck Off” and their most famous song, “Scum”. Even though none of the original members from the first album are now in the band, the current line-up has kept Napalm Death has been going strong for over 20 years. The crowd responded well as they were crowd surfing and moshing the whole time. It was a small venue and pit but that doesn’t stop anyone from pushing and shoving against each other. Seeing them perform this time somehow opened me up more to them and I think I’m going to go out and buy some more of their albums instead of just the one I have right now.
The headliner was the band that everyone came to see, the legendary Cannibal Corpse which is currently the biggest selling death metal band in the USA. This was my first time seeing them so it was exciting to see how they would do. They exceeded my expectations. The crowd reacted strongly with some violent moshing and crowd surfing everywhere. This was their 25th anniversary and their setlist composed of songs from all their albums to celebrate the occasion.
Cannibal Corpse is one of those bands where, again, you pretty much can’t understand a single word George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher is saying due to his deep growling voice unless you read the lyrics and follow along. I never knew that vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher was such a comedian. In between songs he would mess with us, call us names jokingly, lie to us, and have all-around fun with us saying repulsive things. I expected them to have a more serious tone but I ended up having fun. Some of their songs in their setlist included: “”A Skull Full Of Maggots”, “Addicted To Vaginal Skin”, “I Cum Blood”, “Make Them Suffer”, and their most famous song “Hammer Smashed Face”. Cannibal Corpse is a must listen to band if you’re into the death metal genre. I’ll definitely be listening to more of their material in the near future.
