David Coverdale and Whitesnake rolled into The Hard Rock Live at Universal Orlando Monday night in support of Whitesnake’s new album Purple. An album of Deep Purple songs covering the era in which David Coverdale fronted Deep Purple (’73-’76).
Soon to be 64 years old, Coverdale has definitely lost a great deal of his vocal range. However, his loss of vocal range did not affect his ability to charm the crowd. His frontman skills are still sharp and his vocals were on par with what you might expect from an old rocker. He delivered a top notch performance. Don’t expect a David Lee Roth type of debacle. Coverdale delivered the goods.
Whitesnake is virtually an all star band including Drum legend Tommy Aldridge. Aldridge was on fire and put on a clinic for what hard rock drumming is about. He’ll be 65 years old next week. (Aug. 15) OMG!!!
Without pulling up a setlist (you can find it online) I can tell you that Whitesnake played all of their big hit songs, much to the appreciation of the SRO crowd. They opened with a Deep Purple song called “Burn”. The only one I knew. It was fast, furious and set the tempo for the night. They played 4 other Purple songs as well as a dual guitar solo and Tommy Aldridge’s legendary drum solo.
David Coverdale knew what his audience wanted though, And using his words, “Let’s blow the fucking roof off of this place.” They did just that. One big hit right after another.
