Finnish singer Tarja Turunen is most famously known for fronting Finnish symphonic metal legends Nightwish from 1996 until her dismissal in 2005. In 2006, she started her solo career and since then has released seven studio albums (four rock, two Christmas, one classical). In 2016, she released her sixth studio album The Shadow Self and has been actively touring for the album. Since her departure from Nightwish, Tarja has not preformed in the USA until this year when she announced four exclusive shows promoting her latest live album titled Act II so the tour was called Act II Release Shows. The final stop on the tour was the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles so fans of hers and Nightwish were finally able to see her in all her glory. Even before doors opened, a line had formed outside the venue in anticipation after waiting for many years.
The lights went out and fans cheered and yelled out Tarja’s name as her band member’s came out. Tarja was the last to come out as the band started the show with No Bitter End from the latest album. Tarja’s voice only seems to get better with age as she graciously performed her operatic vocals to perfection as heard on the album. Fans were ecstatic to finally get their chance to see Tarja perform in person. The second song performed was 500 Letters followed by Demons In You. Throughout the whole night, Tarja was full of energy and showed she was happy to be back in Los Angeles after a long time. After a few more songs, Tarja surprised fans by performing snippet covers of Nightwish songs which included Tutankhamen/Ever Dream/The Riddler/Slaying the Dreamer. To tone things down for a bit, the band sat down to perform an acoustic set which consisted of The Reign/Mystique Voyage/House of Wax/I Walk Alone. The show was coming close to an end as the band performed Undertaker, Love to Hate then finished up with Victim of Ritual. The band left the stage and fans didn’t seem to wanna leave as they cheered and chanted Tarja’s name. After a short break, the band came back out and performed some encores. The encores were Innocence and Die Alive before wrapping up the show with Until My Last Breath. Tarja put on a truly beautiful performance that should be witnessed by any and all fans of Nightwish. Hopefully it’s not a very long time before she comes back.
