Yesterday David Byrne & St. Vincent announced plans for a huge tour this Summer. The party starts with back-to-back shows at the Wellmont Theater in New Jersey and stretches into July where things will come to a close at the Fox Theater in Oakland. For the dates, check below. Last Night David Byrne and St. Vincent were on David Letterman. They played a song called “I Should Watch TV” while we all, well, watched TV. The song features plenty of odd facial expressions by Byrne as most of their performances do. Check out the video below, and thanks to Consequence Of Sound for the photo above that I borrowed.
David Byrne and St Vincent (Annie) sat down for an Interview with Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report Thursday Night. They discussed living in New York and dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which includes their place having no power or water and having to travel to Brooklyn to take showers. Stephen actually brought up a good point when he offered them his backstage shower by saying “Let’s all three get in there set up a web cam and raise money for this thing!”. Seriously not the worst idea I’ve ever heard. Found it interesting that David Byrne decided to go with the little earpiece microphone thing for the interview. The duo them performed the song “Who”. Last night David Byrne & St Vincent began the trek on their lengthy tour in support of their collaborative effort ‘Love This Giant’ in Minneapolis. Well check this out, there’s video floating around the internet of them doing “Burning Down The House” from last night-and it is indeed awesome. They got that odd orchestra going, you got Byrne with the ear piece microphone that bothers the crap out of me-lots of different elements here worth checking out. We’ve embedded the video below

Last night it was Jimmy Fallon, where the duo performed the songs “Who” and “The Forest Awakes”, the latter being a web exclusive. David Byrne & St. Vincent Team Up For ‘Love This Giant’ Tour
This sounds nothing short of incedible. Apparently David Byrne and St. Vincent have spent the past few years working on an album together. The album titled Love This Giant will finally see the light of day on September 11th. The duo are also giving you the lead single Who for the price of an e-mail address. You can download it below.
Byrne and St. Vincent are also setting out on a tour of North America to support the effort. The trek kicks off September 15th in Minnesota and wraps in Vancouver on October 20th. You can check out the dates for yourself down below.

The beautiful and highly talented Annie Erin Clark (better known as St. Vincent) has announced spring tour dates in support of her 2011 effort Strange Mercy. The trek will kick off on April 14th at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and wrap May 24th at the National in Richmond Virginia. St. tUnE-yArDs will support St. Vincent on the west coast dates sandwiched by both weekends of Coachella. On Monday, St. Vincent stopped by Conan on a night where Kate Beckinsale’s hotness almost blew up my television. Another artist that will be at Coachella 2012 they were introduced and strummed a few chords of an Elvis Costello-ish sounding tune. Then, just when it’s about to break Annie Erin Clark waves her hands in the air demanding the band stop. She then says into the mic “I’m sorry ladies and gentleman, there is no reason to play that song”, before diving into the beautiful track called “Cheerleader”.
Now the only thing this writer knows about St. Vincent is the stuff I read here at Concert Confessions, so I actually had to go listen to the song Cheerleader afterwards to see if this is how the song actually goes, or was that just an audible called at the line of scrimmage last minute. Turns out, it was an audible. Not that “Cheerleader” is filled with F-Bombs or anything, but imagine if it was? How cool would that would’ve been? Either way, the video below should share with you not only the coolness of this band, but also a really bad ass guitar.
It was towards the end of the set when someone in the crowd screamed “You are a really good guitar player.” I was thinking the exact same thing, yet was not drunk enough to scream it out at Annie Erin Clark, better known as St. Vincent. To be honest, I am not even sure how I ended up at the Music Box in Hollywood for a sold out performance by St. Vincent, but there I was drink in my hand watching a fellow Arrested Development fan rock it out on stage.
What puzzled me most about the evening was the crowd. It was like being at a wax museum, because nobody moved. Folks just stood in place and looked like they were dead. I can’t figure out why, the band sounded great performing plenty of tracks from the just released record Strange Mercy. Some of the highlights included “Cheerleader”, “Neutered Fruit” and “Chloe in the Afternoon.” Not even a cover of a song from the obscure British post-punk noise makers The Pop Group would excite the crowd. Truth be told it was rather depressing.
My lasting impression of the night was that the loud mouth in the crowd was dead on – St. Vincent is a really good guitar player. The tones, the sounds and the unusual licks coming from the six strings made me think of many post hardcore/space rock bands that I adore, yet sounded nothing like them at all. I also would not be shocked if St. Vincent was fighting a cold. If that’s the case, way to get up there and hang and sound great despite not feeling great. An enjoyable night of music I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I did, there is no doubt I would check out St. Vincent again.
When the Heritage Hunter tour was announced, I knew I had to go. Opeth was the band on the tour that I was the least familiar with, and upon fully immersing myself in their challenging brand of progressive metal, I knew I’d be in for a fantastic show. Combining light, almost beautiful song structures with the louder, heavier sounds of common heavy metal (and a touch of dry, awkward humor from frontman Mikael Akerfeldt in between songs) the Swedes managed to put on a show that was set right in front of an amazing Atlanta sunset.
9. Umphrey’s McGee
With great jamming comes some great responsibility. Umphrey’s McGee are a jam band known for ridiculous song covers, odd stage presence, great lights, and insane guitar playing. Keep in mind, all this comes from six dudes who look like they could be working at a Best Buy or Target, and call themselves “Umphrey’s McGee.” They’re a cult act, no doubt, and this 2 AM – 6 AM concert at Bonnaroo showed that their fans will go where they go. I only stuck around for the first half of the show (I left right around the time Big Gigantic played their guest spot) but I got what I wanted. I got a “Bulls on Parade” tease, a “Stranglehold” tease, and some of the most intense jamming I’ve heard from any band. It was a rock and roll set, without a doubt, and it was one of the best rock and roll sets I’m sure Bonnaroo has ever seen.
The headlining act of the aforementioned Heritage Hunter tour is a force to be reckoned with. Mastodon is a band that is exactly what the name implies: A big hairy beast that could crush a thousand men with the stomp of its foot. They played mostly new material from their stellar 2011 album “The Hunter” during the hometown gig and barely addressed the audience, but the concert was full of the sheer force that the Atlanta boys are known for. The facial hair on these guys alone should be enough to make the average man cower in fear. I would’ve liked to hear more from “Crack the Skye,” but it’s hard to complain when you’re witnessing one of the most brutal sludge/doom/weird metal bands of the past decade play songs in front of you.
Dispatch make catchy summer music and Bonnaroo is a festival built for specifically that. After nearly a decade long break from touring and releasing new material, the jam/roots rock band with a massive cult following has returned to rock the faces off frat boys who graduated from Dave Matthews Band University. The trio are phenomenal instrumentalists and write a great catchy tune. Although I couldn’t see the whole show, I saw enough to know that Dispatch’s music translates very very well to a live setting, especially when you’ve got a bigger crowd then one would expect from a band with literally no mainstream help.
6. Flogging Molly
Celtic punk isn’t for the critics, and neither is Flogging Molly. Nothing about Flogging Molly is very original, but it is a lot of fun. The sand that lined the floor was in the air and in my lungs by the time these guys finished their high-energy set. This set included their most well-known song “Seven Deadly Sins” as well as a Bob Dylan cover. Flogging Molly didn’t show up to promote any new music, but they did have a blast, as did I and the many other people who witnessed them perform.
5. St. Vincent
Anyone who knows me knows about my year-long crush on Annie Clark, the brains behind St. Vincent. And when I finally got to witness her perform music live in front of my eyes, I was not at all disappointed. Everything about this performance was everything I could’ve wanted from a St. Vincent show and more. She played mostly songs from her amazing 3rd album Strange Mercy, but threw in a couple songs from her first two albums. The set was full of energy, as well as beauty and intensity. And the way she plays that guitar… I could go on forever about how great of a musician this woman is. Bottom line is, you need to see her live if you want a great show.
4. Childish Gambino
Anyone who knows me knows about my man crush on Donald Glover, a standup comedian, writer, actor on the greatest comedy on television “Community,” and rapper. The rapper part of this complicated equation, Childish Gambino, put on a monster of a set at Bonnaroo. He walked on stage with what I can only refer to as “swagger,” wearing a black tanktop that was purposely a bit too big. He led the audience through energetic versions of “Bonfire,” “Freaks and Geeks,” “Heartbeat,” “You See Me,” and plenty more that just turned into sing-a-longs, for lack of a better word. It’s the only real hip hop show I’ve ever been to, and it was a fantastic experience. Gambino isn’t the world’s greatest rapper, but he certainly knows how to handle himself on stage.
Radiohead release some of the most beloved music of the past 15 years. Almost every other album they put out is hailed as a classic: OK Computer, Kid A, In Rainbows, etc.; and if they aren’t hailed as a classic they’re almost always lauded by critics and fans alike. The reception for their most recent release, 2011’s The King of Limbs, wasn’t as positive as it was for some of their other albums, but it still gets better with each listen. Radiohead’s 2006 Bonnaroo performance is often hailed as one of their best, and they without a doubt topped that performance with their 2012 Bonnaroo performance. Although half the set was songs from In Rainbows and The King of Limbs, the 25-song set was one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. They ended the first encore with Everything In Its Right Place and the second encore with Paranoid Android, two of their most incredible and ambitious works. And not only did they play with energy and emotion, but the lights and the screen display was one of the best of all time. Up there with Phish and Pink Floyd. Speaking of Phish…
I saw Phish twice this year. And from the very first song at Bonnaroo (Down With Disease) I knew that I was witnessing what might be the best touring band in America. The jamming is top-notch and the lights display is astonishing, especially since a good portion of the show is improvised. At Bonnaroo they brought out country music legend Kenny Rogers and performed his hit “The Gambler” with him, which proved to me that Phish can do a great cover. I also got to hear them perform their cover of TV On the Radio’s “Golden Age” the first time (I heard it again in Atlanta). Also in Atlanta I heard their cover of Ween’s “Roses Are Free” which was perhaps a tribute to the newly split group and they encored with a cover of The Beatles’ “A Day In the Life,” which would have made John Lennon proud. They’re not a band you’d expect to put on a great live performance since they hardly move from their spots while they play, but somehow they are able to reach these incredible crescendos that create this cloud of energy. Both shows I saw were amazing, and they’re a band you must see live at some point.
1. Flaming Lips
Has anyone ever seen Flaming Lips and been disappointed? Even if you’re not a big fan of their music the way they perform and the amount of effort they put into making the live experience perfect should earn them some respect. Lights, balloons, streamers, strings, explosions; all of this and more were a part of Flaming Lips’ Saturday night performance in Atlanta. They played some of their stranger songs like “See the Leaves” and “Pompeii am Götterdämmerung” as well as their more accessible hits like “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1” and “the Yeah Yeah Yeah Song.” They ended their beautiful and powerful live show with the all-out emotion-fest that is “Do You Realize??” which is probably their best song. It’s full of thought-provoking lyrics and is so powerful when performed live that it almost brought happy tears to my eyes. If you’ve lived this long without seeing Flaming Lips live, then I feel a bit of pity for you. But Flaming Lips tour very very often when they’re not busy paying tribute to King Crimson or Pink Floyd on record. So go out and see them. I did, and I have no complaints whatsoever. They’re the best band I saw this year, and probably the best band I’ve ever seen.
2012 Heineken City Arts Festival Initial Lineup Announced
A day after they trade Ichiro Suzuki to the Yankees for almost nobody, Seattle is back in the news. With this writer’s favorite beer providing sponsorship, the initial lineup for the Heineken City Arts Festival was announced today, and it’s nothing short of awesome.
Headlining the bill are David Byrne & St. Vincent, Ghostland Observatory and Two Door Cinema Club. The Festival madness begins at Seattle’s historic Fifth Avenue Theatre on October 17th. This festival will run through October 20th, and performances taking place in various clubs, halls, and venues throughout Seattle. Bonnaroo Preview: The Top 12 Must-See Acts to Catch at the Farm
If you know me in any way, then you probably know that I am attending this year’s Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festivalin Manchester, Tennessee. It is repeatedly called “Best Festival of the Summer” by many music-based magazines and websites,and tens of thousands head out to Manchester every year to catch acts big and small. So here are my Top 12 acts of this year’s installment of Bonnaroo!

12. St. Vincent
St. Vincent, a.k.a. Annie Clark, has got to be one of the coolest women around these days. When she’s not making appearances in Top 100 Guitarists lists, she’s busy promoting her solid 2011 album Strange Mercy at festivals such as Coachella and Sasquatch. Her live show always gets rave reviews, therefore I am excited to catch her 7:45 set on Friday night.
Dispatch are among the many bands who have reunited within the past year. The indie/roots jam band with a devoted following released a couple albums throughout the 90s before breaking up in 2002, playing one-off gigs in 2004, 2007, and 2009. They officially reunited last year, releasing a 6-song EP of new material and co-headlined the Dave Matthews Band Caravan touring festival. Their songs may not be very complex, but they are notorious for fun shows full of adoring fans. What more could a fan ask for?
10. Alabama Shakes
If any band deserves the title “Breakout Band of 2012,” it’s blues outfit Alabama Shakes, led by the phenomenal Ms. Brittany Howard. Based on videos I have seen from their live shows, they give energetic performances and wow the crowds every time. They’ve even got the honor of opening for Mr. Jack White on his solo tour. Their solid bluesy throwback with a soulful singer is perfect for the 100-degree Tennessee weather.
9. Gary Clark Jr.
Speaking of blues, here is a man who some have called “The Savior of Blues.” While that is debatable, I do know that Gary Clark Jr. is well on his way to becoming this year’s recipient of the Guitar God award, if one does exist. He is a slaying guitar player and his brand of blues tinged classic rock is always a crowd pleaser.
8. Bad Brains
Out of all the punk bands that came out of D.C. in the early 80s, Bad Brains were certainly the ballsiest. Their dreads were natty, their songs had the fierceness of Minor Threat (or the chill of Bob Marley, depending on which song you listen to) and they are the very reason the Beastie Boys existed. Now it’s just a matter of whether or not (lead singer) HR has what it takes to keep the energy going in That Tent.
7. Flogging Molly
For those who think The Pogues are too Irish and the Dropkick Murphys not Irish enough, there is Flogging Molly. Their last album came out a year ago, so it doesn’t seem like they’re playing to support it. They’re just playing for the hell of it, and I can’t wait to witness these guys for the first time ever. Will I lose my mind during “Seven Deadly Sins”, you ask? Does the Pope poop in the woods? (Yes.)
6. Umphrey’s McGee
To be honest, I am not too familiar with this band. With Dispatch and Phish on the bill, jam experts Umphrey’s McGee are almost overshadowed, with a late-night set that conflicts that of IDM/freak-raver Flying Lotus. I have heard on countless occasions that UM’s late night sets are ones that should not ever be missed, so I am letting curiosity get the best of me for this 2 A.M. set.
I know, it’s just a bit too obvious to put the headliners in the list, but I’m doing it anyway. If you asked me at the beginning of the year, I would’ve told you that I couldn’t care less about Radiohead and I didn’t care to see them, but things have changed. Radiohead (whose 2006 Roo performance has been hailed as one of their best) have really upped the ante with their 2012 live show. After watching—and being amazed by—their Coachella performance, I know that I have to see them, if only just to cross them off the bucket list.
4. Major Lazer
If you were to ask thenaturalstoner who his favorite act of Sasquatch 2011 was, he’ll more likely than not say Major Lazer. The reggae-infused electronic act (dynamic duo Diplo and Scratch) are known for astounding live shows, which is way better than anything you’ll hear on their debut album “Guns Don’t Kill People, Lazers Do.” So I am hoping that the dudes do not disappoint me when I catch them in This Tent after Radiohead.
3. Red Hot Chili Peppers
Yes, I know. Another headliner. But bear with me. See I have been listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers since I was just a toddler. My parents tell me I even used to sing “Scar Tissue” as a young’n! I’m looking forward to catching these guys regardless of how Anthony sounds nowadays. I do know that Flea is one of the baddest bass players of all time, and the new guy, Josh Klinghoffer, ain’t half bad either. So whether I’m singing along to “Under the Bridge” or jamming out to “By the Way”, I am going to see Red Hot Chili Peppers and have a fantastic time.

He is a fantastic lyricist, an energetic performer, and an all-around cool guy. Whether you’ve seen his stand-up specials on Comedy Central or his role on NBC’s cult favorite Community, you know that Donald Glover is one cool dude. Gambino is a mastermind.
I have been wanting to see jam-band Phish since their reunion in 2009. My dad is a long time fan (he’s seen them twice already) and most writers for the site have seen them numerous times. Now I am not a religious follower of Phish’s live bootlegs; I don’t know what songs they play and which songs they don’t play and I don’t know which versions of their songs are good and which versions are bad. I do know that Phish are a great band who I am excited to see more than anyone else. From 8:00 to 12:00, I get to enjoy a delicious Phish Philet before heading home from my first ever camping festival. And that’s what’s up.
Mumford & Sons Announce Four North American ‘Gentlemen of the Stopover’ Dates
In a day and age where every major metropolitan area seems to be launching a new destination festival, Mumford & Sons are putting a unique twist on the American concert going experience here in the 21st century.

I know you and I go way back (hope all is well!) and it has been a long time since we have talked, but there is just something extremely exciting that has built inside of me about what is going to happen this weekend at THE GORGE for the 2012 version of the Sasquatch! Festival that I must tell you about. Last years Festival set the stage for a year of great memories and the need to “go back every year no matter what”. We’ll see if that every year thing happens, but the terrible trio of thenaturalstoner, Phishbeard and Mr. Sparklymade it at least one more year and are ready to dominate every single thing about the next several days. I feel like last years performances by Chromeo, Modest Mouse, Foo Fighters, Sleigh Bells, Major Lazer and more have planted a seed at the Gorge that is about to sprout like a f’n weed and engulf all 20,000 of us that are going to be there for the entire four days.
But really who gives a shit about last year anymore. I know you don’t. We are talking about 2012 and hooolllllly shit does it look exciting. I will be heading in pretty early Friday night to see Of Monsters and Men kick off the Fest. Maybe even a little earlier for Allen Stone if I get the urge, but I have been hooked on that Of Monsters and Men album for a long while now. Most of Santigold will follow, and then one of the sets I am looking forward to most all weekend, Starfucker!! Sadly this means I have to skip the Mark Lanegan Band, which is a bummer, really wanted to see that one. Half of Girl Talkand then another performance to be VERY excited about, Explosions in the Sky. I have been told numerous times that their last Sasquatch! Festival set absolutely owned the Festival and was a “life changing experience”. I don’t want to get hopes too high, but that portion of Friday sounds amazing. Then Pretty Lights to take the night home aka into the raucous Gorge Campground to continue the party late into the evening.
Saturday looks to be my longest day inside the venue by far. Ideally I will make it in bright and early at Noon to see Reptar > Charles Bradley while Pickwick will be hitting hard on a different stage. I may still be asleep at this time however and might not make it into The Gorge until Blitzen Trapper at 2pm. One of my only conflicts of the entire weekend is after that, The Civil Wars vs. The Alabama Shakes vs. Portlandia. This is a game time decision friends. I know Mr. Sparkly and I will be at Jamey Johnson at the Sasquatch Stage afterwards, and then I will either see Childish Gambino or AraabMuzik. Seeing Gambino a few weeks back makes this a tough decision as I really like the AraabMuzik jams I have heard. Some free time where I will see an interesting mix of Metric, The Shins, St. Vincent and tUnE-yArDs continues the evening. Probably my most anticipated set of the weekend, Jack White, followed by The Roots late night (HELL. YES.) caps off a Saturday for the ages.
I hope all is well back home. How is the family? Still got that pet, what’s its name? Come visit us sometime, we miss seeing you up here. Sparkly might be getting a new house, Phishbeards over in Oregon, I got an air mattress, come on up! It will be like old times.
Back to the music. Sunday to me is a complete free for all-except for the very end of the night. I don’t really have much I MUST see this day, but there is an interesting assortment of bands playing: Trampled by Turtles, Blind Pilot, The War on Drugs, Chiddy Bang, M. Ward, Deer Tick, Tycho, The Head and the Heart and We Are Augustines are all early in the day. I will be a roamer for sure (you remember how I do!). I might check out Apparat or Beirut before definitely catching half of Little Dragon. My highlight of Sunday, a James Murphy DJ set up in the Banana Shack promises to be off the charts. I’ll probably head over to get one song of Bon Ivers show on video so ConcertConfessions gets some web hits, and then its off to Feed Me (with Teeth!!) to dance the rest of the night away.
Monday will be somewhat bittersweet. A great day lined up to close out another long Memorial Day weekend full of memories (like back in the day when we were hangin’). I might get in there early for that Grouplove set, I don’t know. Gary Clark Jr. will be a for sure, especially after just watching his Hangout Festival set webcast, and then a little more free time for the MC. The Joy Formidable, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, Cloud Cult, fun., Feist, Shabazz Palaces, and Shearwater are all early afternoon and I will bounce around the place. John C. Reilly and Friends over at the Yeti Stage will be a great time, but I will have to sadly miss The Cave Singers and most of Silversun Pickupsbecause of it. Then my only other real big conflict awaits. I am certainly going to see the start of SBTRKT in the Banana Shack, and will have to miss all of Spiritualized. However, one of your favorites, Tenacious D, is playing shortly after SBTRKT starts and I will have to decide if staying for them is worth missing half of The D. Another decision that will be made on the spot. I will at least see the end of Tenacious D before getting just a small part of Mogwai in. I wish I could see more but the great Beck is closing out the Festival over on the main stage. I have been wanting to see him for almost TWENTY years now, and this will be my first time getting to do so. Remember listening to Mellow Gold on end back in the day? I hope it’s amazing. It sure seems like a great way to end a Festival, way better than Wilcos tame set last year.

We get a ton of email daily from Canadian citizens crying over the lack of festivals in their nation. Okay that is a giant lie I don’t think anyone from Canada has ever seen the site. That is also a lie. Regardless, another hour has passed and we have another festival to share with you. This one is in Ottawa which is in Canada and it lasts twelve days. It used to be called the Ottawa Bluesfest, but they decided to change the name to RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest. I had three goals for Coachella on Saturday. See as many acts as possible while getting inebriated enough to enjoy Radiohead after having my Kasabian live cherry popped. All I have to say is Mission Fucking Accomplished.
One of my top twelve bands to see at Coachella, I made it to the stage about ½ through the Flower Punkers set. I saw no barfing; I saw no guitars being played by cocks. Instead I saw a rather small crowd gathered around the band. Oh and I saw the wonderful Adrian Garro, who I then spoke with instead of actually watching the band. How is that for a deep journalistic review? (Update – per the user comment below I guess I missed the cock show. This is why you should never hang out with your friends).
I don’t watch a lot of TV, and what I do watch certainly isn’t on NBC (and if it was, do you think I would actually admit here that I am a fan of Parenthood?). So while I can’t talk about the skills at his day job, Donald Glover’s side job as a rapper is pretty fantastic. With a massive crowd at the main stage in the hot afternoon sun, Gambino delighted the crowd more with his charm than his mic skills. Highlights included “Heartbeat,” “Fire Fly” and a cover of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” I think for most in the crowd (at least the two in front of me) the highlight was no so much Gambino’s ZZ Top T-shirt, but his song “Asian Girls Everywhere (UCLA).” Then again, how could that song not be a hit in sunny Southern California?
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
There was a moment on Saturday when Miss Potter was dancing on stage in her bikini top and leather shorts and she spotted me amongst a sea of hippiesters. Perhaps it was the Phish shirt, or the fact that I was not moving to the groups hit “Paris (Oh La La)” but she gave me a look and it clearly said the following: “Hey, what am I supposed to do, I can play tiny shit hole clubs as a respectable jam friendly musician or I can be a whore. You whore in a cube all day, I whore on stage all day it is what it is honey now stop looking at my rolls when I turn to rock out with our drummer.” I get it Grace you are living the rock and roll dream we all have and I refuse to knock you for that. But damn I wish you had stayed more Bonnaroo instead of going Hollywood and for the record this performance was 1,000 times hotter than anything you have done in the past two years.
After checking out some of the installations at the festival/finding out Kasabian had cancelled their signing I decided to check out Zed’s Dead on the recommendation of our pal Jakob. The fans inside the Sahara tent were obnoxious and I really wanted to like the music but as more time went on it got on my nerves. This was the first real sign on this particular weekend that there is now an entire generation of music after the generation of music I grew up with. I am the old timer and I am going to need to learn how to accept that.
Just stopped in for a quick hello. They are legends after all. I dug the song I heard, it reminded me of Phish. On to the next thing.
The Head and the Heart
Knowing it was a long day, I sat just outside whatever tent these indie country types played at and found it rather enjoyable. Mellow, which was exactly what I was looking for at that point in time. Perhaps better in a small club than a festival tent but the band sounded good. The only thing that bothered me about the set was the pants worn by Charity Rose. Dreadful.
As far as old punk bands go, Buzzcocks came into my life about a decade ago. I was drawn in by their unique melodies and how they incorporated things like keys into their jarring sounds. With a massive circle pit causing a large dust cloud to rise inside the Gobi Tent, the few fans of punk who made it into Coachella were pumped for the career spanning set. The Buzzcocks saved most of their well-known songs including “Orgasm Addict” and “Something’s Gone Wrong Again” saved for the tail end of the set. I tell ya, the kids go crazy for car commercials as “What Do I Get?” got the biggest reaction from the crowd. Personally I am just glad I finally got a chance to see these guys live, a great high energy set performed by the boys from Bolton.
Caught the tail of the set by catching up with an old friend I grew up with. Not bad, but it felt like they tried too hard. But hey, better them on the main stage at 5pm than Kasabian. I did feel bad when the band begged fans to tell all their friends about them. Perhaps it is time I start a PR firm that promotes solid UK acts who never get a chance stateside? Oh and how bad ass is the above photo as I took it from about 800 feet away?!?!?!?!
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
Gallagher’s stop last year at UCLA’s Royce Hall was magical. I didn’t know how well Gallagher would do on the main stage during dinner time but as it turns out that just shows you how lame I am. Gallagher is a genius and after playing show after show in the worlds largest venues he knew just what to do. He cranked the distortion up to 11, made sure the drums were heavy in the mix and rocked the fuck out. Songs from his self-titled solo effort like “The Death of You and Me,” “If I Had A Gun,” and “(Stranded On) The Wrong Beach” were transformed from well crafted pop songs into all out stadium rockers. While many in the audience shows zero reaction to Oasis songs like “Mucky Fingers” and “Little By Little” they did indeed go nuts when the band performed “Don’t Look Back in Anger.” This of course was problematic to Mr. Gallagher as scolded the audience for cheering when he said he had a final song and not boooing. Well played Noel, well played indeed.
We all know St. Vincent is incredible. Where Grace Potter failed at being sexy, St. Vincent oozed it. Opening with “Northern Lights” St. Vincent was not only confident she was dominant in seducing the large Gobi Tent crowd with her music. A flawless version of “Cheerleader” followed as the sun was now fully set upon the Empire Polo Fields. “Chloe In The Afternoon” came next and sounded even heavier than on the record. I would love to know what kind of pedal she is using to get that beefy crunchy low end distortion from her guitar. After being won over by her set last fall in Hollywood, I wish I could have seen the entire set, but as she launched into her fourth song “Actor Out Of Work” I knew I had to depart in order to experience a life changing event.
No, Squeeze was not the life changing event. They were just the act playing to all the parents who brought their young kids out to the desert. The song I heard, well I will just say if you don’t have anything nice to say, you must be listening to Squeeze.
If you have read the site, you know that this band has been my long running obsession. As soon as Squeeze finished I forced myself up to the front of the Mojave Tent and quickly discovered that it is not just I who had waited a long, long time for this moment. I met fans from Europe, Saudia Arabia and Reno who had made the trek to Coachella just to catch an hour with Kasabian. In the minutes before the band hit the stage, fans began singing to chorus to the groups hit “Fire.” It was the only time I have seen this kind of pre-set energy at Coachella. When the band did hit the stage at 8:35 pm sharp they opened with a fierce 1-2 punch of “Days Are Forgotten” and “Velociraptor!” I see a lot of bands, but I was truly freaking out like some 13 year old girl who just met Justin Bieber. It was Kasabian and they were loud and three feet away from my face.
The band playing a much shorter set than their typical headline shows did a superb job of mixing new material in with classic jams from their first and third records. With no proper US tour for West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum it was a treat when the band tore the tent to shreds with “Underdog” (which included some sweet improved lyrics from lead guitarist Sergio Pizzorno about the large amounts of marijuana being smoked in front of the band). Joking about how they were kids when they last played Coachella in 2005 “I.D.” from the bands self-titled debut was not only a welcome treat but the perfect song for the electronic heavy festival.
From what I could gather the band was winning over fans left and right, especially after a jaw dropping take on the Noel Gallagher dedicated “Club Foot.” A humorous moment came right before “Re-Wired” as lead singer Tom Meighan pointed out a fan with a mask of the Queen of England before promptly booing her Majesty. Sadly before things really began they were coming to an end. Now with a full on mosh pit going down in front of the stage, the group closed with the effective combination of West Ryder classics “Vlad The Impaler” and “Fire.” It didn’t matter how tired I already was at that point, I gave it my all jumping up and down per the instructions of Pizzorno. In closing, I have noticed many times in life you long to see a band you love and when you finally do see them it’s amazing yet expectations are not met. Kasabian in 50 minutes are the one act I have seen who went above and beyond my high expectations and I can’t wait to do it all over again on Tuesday night.
All I can tell you is that he was bummed he was almost out of time. Honestly, having just seen Kasabian, I don’t even remember what I heard here.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Godspeed is one of those bands I have always heard of yet never heard. Nothing like I expected, I think I assumed these guys were more like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. With little or no lighting, what appeared to be about eight musicians sat down and made these crazy post rock instrumentals. Really mellow, really different. Took in about two or three songs before going to grab a quick bite and beer before Radiohead.
I tend to be a music snob and have hated everything this band has done since OK Computer. I often get into fights with folks on twitter by comparing their music to “pussy farts.” Yes, two hours was way too long to be alone in a field, but I actually really enjoyed most of Radiohead’s set. Sure, I recognized the hits like “Karma Police” “Lotus Flower” and “Idioteque” but it was some of the non-hits that most intrigued me. The opening song “Bloom” reminded me a lot of Phish which was awesome. I was shocked to hear the band play the song “Lucky” but perhaps that is just because I recognized it. The entire presentation from the light show and video screens was incredible (I can’t believe I am calling something Radiohead related incredible). Hell they even teased Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” before playing “Everything In Its Right Place.” So perhaps I was wrong, perhaps Radiohead is more than pussy farts?!?!?! I am not rushing to call them the greatest band, but they no doubt changed my feelings on them with a pretty spectacular Saturday headline set.
The Top 12 Must See Acts of Coachella 2012 According To Our Shit Talking Loud Mouth Founder Reverend Justito
My only trek to Indio for three days of music in the desert was nearly 2 ½ years ago. It featured one band performing 8 sets for 45,000 devoted fans. Truth be told, I am a bit scared of my first Coachella experience. I am not really the violent type, but the right mix of mind altering substances as well as the heat and general stupidity of 89,989 fucktards rocking fedoras may just send me into a murderous rampage. I suppose it’s a good thing that the fine folks at Goldenvoice don’t allow weapons onto the lush green lawn known as the Empire Polo Fields. But enough with the hate, weekend one of Coachella is just days away and I want to share with you the top 12 artists I am looking to forward to enjoying in the middle of the fucking desert.
I tried to catch these lovable Silver Lake by way of the UK and Brooklyn yet formed in Greece hippiesters at the 2011 Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco. Booked on the festivals smallest stage yet performing to a massive crowd my pals and I were so far back that we had no choice but to enjoy some whiskey and pretend that we could hear what was going on. With tours of a land down under and a few national TV appearances under their belt since Outside Lands, hopefully I can get a bit closer to the group this time around. If not, at least I will spend Weekend 2 of Coachella at my Best Friend’s House.
11) The Black Lips:
You don’t go see The Black Lips for the music (well maybe you do) you go see these Atlanta based Flower Punkers to watch them urinate on stage, puke on stage, chug beers on stage and spit snot rockets into the air only to catch it in their mouths and swallow it down. Hopefully around the time they play their guitars with their penises, I am vomiting all over those annoying racist white girls who dress like Native American Princesses. Don’t worry honey, I drink microbrew your moccasins will be just fine it’s the headdress that you need to worry about.
10) St. Vincent:
While I would prefer more METAL at Coachella, one thing that the festival is stacked with is great female talent. From Feist to that Florence chick who sounds like a dying pigeon when she sings this may be the best collection of ass kicking females in one place since Lilith Fair 1998. I was shocked at how impressed I was with St. Vincent when I caught her in Hollywood last fall. While I am not sure if her show will translate from a small dark theatre to a sun baked polo field if nothing conflicts I look forward to finding out. Oh and she may be the one individual at Coachella whose skin is more fair than mine. Perhaps we can share sun block after she gives me tips on how to kick ass on guitar as hard as she does.
9) The Buzzcocks:
For me classic punk bands are like Pokemon, I have to catch them all. With the likes of Angry Samoans, FEAR and Youth Brigade checked off the list, Coachella 2012 is my chance to catch the pride and joy of Bolton England. Here is hoping that “Orgasm Addict” and “Something’s Gone Wrong Again” make it onto the setlist.
8 ) Grace Potter and the Nocturnals:
Unknown to her, Grace Potter is my future ex-wife. Long before she was rocking VH1 award shows wearing fancy clothes, this Vermont native was winning me over with her hippielicious 70’s arena rock. Oh and the best thing about seeing Miss Potter and crew at a festival is the fact I can still enjoy her without violating that nasty court order saying I must stay 250 feet away at all times.
7) Childish Gambino:
If Foxy Shazam is White Music For Black People, does that make Childish Gambino Black Music for White People? Granted I don’t know much about hip hop, everything I have heard by this dude is great. It’s like Drake, but not a total fucking joke. Plus we both drink whiskey till we are grounded, here is to passing out in the tent during his set. That is of course when I am not puking on Asian girls from UCLA?
As an American, my vote is that you play “Common People” and then get the fuck off the stage so The Black Keys can rock. Oh and have a meltdown, because I have always wanted to see a Brit-Pop band have a breakdown on stage. I kid of course, granted I don’t really know much about Pulp, I have a thing for bands from the UK who don’t get the respect they deserve on this continent. So knowing they don’t come over here often, Pulp you best amaze the fuck out of me.
I get the feeling Girls will make a lot of new fans at Coachella this year. Their performance at the Music Box last December was their biggest US headline gig to date and they blew the roof off the fucking place. Their 2011 release Father, Son, Holy Ghost made it onto numerous top ten lists for good reason. From lush ballads like “Love Like A River” to Sabbath inspired rockers like “Vomit” and “Die” this band is truly something special and not to be missed.
4) Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds:
While I fully expect to see a water-downed version of Gallagher’s stunning November 2012 appearance on the campus of UCLA, that will still be far superior to the performance of Saturday headliners Radiohead. Having hit arena headliner status across the pond in Europe, I have no doubt that Gallagher’s well crafted songs will captivate the masses as the sun sets in the west. Likewise, ladies if you are crushed over his lack of “Wonderwall”, you can cry on my shoulder while Radiohead blow pussy farts across the Polo Fields.
Dead my ass! Refused are back and they are going to kick the living crap out of the hipster nation. Granted I get the vibe they would be better in a small club instead of on a massive stage, the fact is that in 2012 Refused are alive and I will get to see them with my own two eyes. I never thought I would have a chance, but Lord knows I plan to make the most of this one.
2) At The Drive-In:
You can pretty much take the above statement on Refused and put it here. The only difference is that I was going to see At The Drive-In live and then they went and broke up. I kid you not, when those loveable fucks over at Antiquiet broke the news that these mad men from El Paso were reforming I knew I had to finally make the trek to Coachella. Fingers crossed no one moshes thus ending the performance before it even begins.
CAN YOU FEEL IT COMING? Anyone who knows me already knew who the number one band was going to be. It has been 5 long years since Kasabian blessed North American with their presence. Super stars in Europe, Asia and Australia, there are many theories as to why this band has not taken off in America, but who cares. The fact is Kasabian is here in America right now and you are a damn fool if you miss their Saturday performance. Massive anthems from real rock and roll stars, Kasabian is the one act you can’t miss at Coachella 2012. See you in the fucking pit.
After catching her twice the previous year. I made a little trek across the state to see her at a venue I had not been to for 8 years. She did not disappoint.
It was a awesome set, the one that makes you want to come back out as soon as possible and see another. I ended up doing that and almost died in the process shitty story, moving along.
9. Foxy Shazam, The Old Rock House St Louis.

What can I say about this band. I first got to know them by checking out a free instore at my favorite record store Vintage Vinyl. I bought their CD and got two tickets to see them open for Hole. I ended up getting to the show late and only caught the last two songs. I couldn’t wait to see them again.
A few months later they were back and I knew I had to go. Even if that meant missing various other great shows that evening. When he told this Jack Nicolson story I knew I had made the right choice.
Foxy Shazam’s live show can be pretty crazy sometimes a perfect example comes around 5:31 in this next video. I couldn’t believe what I had seen……

8. Drive By Truckers
Drive By Truckers The Pageant St. Louis, MO. 10/02/10
Sometimes I am spontaneous and go to shows on just a whim. That was certainly the case with Drive By Truckers. After seeing a great opening set during the summer Tom Petty Tour. I ended up being off of work the night of their headlining show here. I had no choice, I had to go.
Everything about this show was great, everyone including the security was relaxed. They put on a great show alternating singers between songs really gives a nice variety to the show.
I enjoyed the occasional slide guitar they played during certain songs.
They played great and everyone enjoyed as you can clearly see by the crowd reaction as they retake the stage for the encore.
7. Jackson Browne and David Lindley
I didn’t expect this show to be so good or make my top ten but surprises are sometimes fun. It was either mothers day or close to my mom’s birthday when I got the email saying Jackson Browne was coming to town. I knew he was one of my moms favorite musicians so I jumped at the chance to buy tickets.
I enjoyed the set and got a first hand education on the talented David Lindley who mostly played the slide guitar throughout the set.
While I enjoyed the set my mom loved it, it felt good to be able to see her so happy. She really enjoyed ” Rock Me On The Water”
Needless to say she enjoyed her gift and the show very much. Well worth the money spent, Jackson Browne is a great performer.
6. Van’s Warped Tour 2010 Bonner Springs KS
This one is tough to write about as it was the most life changing moment in all of my year of 2010. It started off so innocently and ended so tragically.
First I made the 5 hour drive in less than 4.5 hours, I was skating to Kansas. I pushed about 75-80 the entire way with minimal stops. I made it to the gas station right before the venue. I picked up two tall boys. I remember sitting in the car, AC blasting pounding these beers as mass amounts of kids waited in line.
As the line moved I pounded my ritual 2 bottles of water, snuck an entire other bottle of Vodka in with me and proceeded to get warped.
First band on my list at the bright and early time of 11 a.m was the almighty PENNYWISE, I scored a rail spot and enjoyed myself as the oven of the day started to preheat to a heat index of 105 +. I knew what Pennywise would close with but did not expect the special guest that joined them for ” Bro Hymm”
Epic to say the least. The next band on my to do list for the day was Shawn The Clown from Slipknot’s Side Project ” DIRTY LITTLE RABBITS”. Sadly the singer was suffering from a broken foot and Shawn had a family situation and couldn’t make it. That didn’t stop them from playing a amazing set and I watched the entire thing. My favorite song they did was called ” Happy”.
After that set I needed some shade and warm shots of Vodka to ease the pain of the intense heat. Followed by some healthy water doses I was ready to endure more heat. The next band I had to see was The Dillenger Escape plan. You wouldn’t know it was insanely hot by the way they played. Intense doesnt even begin to cover it.
After a bit of wondering and more warm vodka shots I was ready to find something else to watch and found it in the form of IWRESTLEDABEAR once. I will be honest like a lot of bands on the tour I watched them because of the cool name. The wall of Death was the highlight of their set for me.
After A bit more shade it was fun time for me. I love seeing the Reel Big Fish, A Lot. They always make me smile and put on a great show. This one was no exception.
Always full of fun and humor this set was my favorite of day, The band Tip The Van Joined them for ” She Has Girlfriend Now “.
The ended their set one a high note with a brief cover of ” Enter Sandman” right into the crowd favorite ” Beer “.
At this point it was about 6 p.m still two hours of warped to go, but what to do? I needed to sober up so the answer was easy, go see more bands.
I remember this part of my day crystal clear as if it was a HD movie playing over and over in my head. I saw this photographer throughout the day on crutches with a broken foot. I went up to talk to him and commend him on his dedication of his craft.
We are walking he is trying to tell me about his website and out of the corner of my eye I notice something disturbing. It was a lifeless body with one person at his side, and everything else just became backround noise.
After a moment the lady at his side was yelling for paramedics who were on the scene in a flash. I watched for maybe 5 minutes as they beat on his lifeless chest. I felt horrible and helpless. Soon after a great crowd gathered around the area as people stood by gawking.
I felt horrible seeing that, and felt worse walking no more than 20-30 feet away to watch Suicide Silence. I figured that would be better than watching the other scene.
It felt so wrong trying to enjoy a show, while someone else is dying in the backround. Every now and again through the pit you could see his lifeless shoe’s still on the ground as Paramedics tried to bring him back. I left that show feeling sick. The entire way home all I could picture was me laying in his spot and being the one that wasn’t as lucky.
I came home went to bed, and awoke to the new’s I was dreading hearing. The man had passed away, to hit closer to home he was my age and in good health. The heat can kill, we all need to respect that and be careful out there.
His name was Curtis Alan Deforest or just Alan to his friends and family and I will never, ever forget him. R.I.P Alan, I am sure you will be at the next warped in spirit.
Fresh off the set of Law & Order: SVU, Ice-T made a fast getaway from the filming of next season’s popular crime drama, on which he has played Detective Sgt Fin Tutuola since 1999, and traded in his NY badge for his iconic black LA baseball cap and black work gloves. From PD to OG, Ice-T is many things…Predictable is not one of them, but being a grand showman certainly is.
Ice-T lit up the Marquee stage with long-time collaborator Ernie C. Together, in 1990, the two formed the controversial LA thrash metal band Body Count. While the band is most famous…or rather INfamous…for their controversial 1992 self-titled album release, Body Count has successfully produced five additional studio albums: Born Dead (1994), Violent Demise: The Last Days (1997), Murder 4 Hire (2006), Manslaughter (2014), and Bloodlust (2017). Even though most of the band’s set list was comprised of their more popular hits from the 90’s, their subsequent releases such as their 2017 Bloodlust cover performance of Slayer’s “Raining in Blood” is consistent with the Body Count feel and sound that made them famous and fit right in among the BC classics all the way back to 1992’s “There Goes The Neighborhood”.
The show opens with sirens and the Body Count title track, including the 9-1-1 “Smoked Pork” dispatch conversation voice-over introduction and the call to order that is the “Body Count Anthem” and “Body Count’s In The House”, both found on the same album. But while in the past the band has focused more on certain people groups, today the message is a bit more refined, pointing fingers at humanity in general. It’s everybody’s fault: #NoLivesMatter. Ice-T picks on every subject from racism to economics. Nothing is sacred. No one is safe. He says what he wants. He makes no apology. He’s not wrong, but at least he sings it to you in a way that makes you want to smash along with him. Body Count is a thrash metal band, and as such may seemingly lack some of the pleasantries and fine-tuning of modern metal music. This is no-frills, straight-up, old-skool. The sound may be raw and the message reality, but there is no shortage of talent in the band’s ranks. Straight outta Compton, Ernie C is still the band’s lead guitar, and he’s anything but typical. Growing up in LA, he was never impressed with the lack of showmanship found in the average R&B artist. He was influenced by bands like The Isley Brothers, but he wanted to live the adrenaline that only rock ‘n’ roll can provide. Now nearly 30 years later, through the iconoclastic anti-establishmentarianism that is BC, Ernie-C’s slick fingers still deftly noodle through Ice-T’s profanity-riddled “Talk Sh*t Get Shot” pimp lyrics like a knife through hot, face-melting butter. It’s melodic, but at the same time it’s mayhem….kinda like his hair. And even though the guitar players are usually the famous guys in the band (next to the lead singer) Body Count wouldn’t be Body Count with the same amount of impeccable rhythm and groove driving the low end. For many years now, Vincent Price has been the Tiffany lamp shade hanging in the fight club barroom that is Body Count…He really ties the room together. First he’s on one side of the stage, then he’s on the other. He’s looking at you, then he’s pointing at me. Encouraging a sing-a-long and shmooving along to the music in love songs such as “KKK B*tch”, nobody goes to a rock show to stand still and be bored, and Vincent Price makes sure you are neither. Over the years, the Body Count line-up has changed slightly. If it’s been a while since you’ve seen a BC show, you’ll notice their new guitar player, Evildead’s Juan Garcia, who joined the band in 2013, and Ill Will on drums since 2009. But somebody’s gotta hold down the fort, as they say, and that is the same Sean E. Sean…the man behind the curtain (even though he’s right there on stage), working magic and running the samples for every song as he’s done since the very beginning. Every show ends with a bang, and Ice-T makes sure to finish everyone off with the heart-wrenching ballad “Momma’s Gotta Die Tonight” followed by the one track that scattered all the record execs back in the day and put the band on the map….”Cop Killer”.
Despite his hardcore presence, Ice-T has always invited others to share his stage and his spotlight. In the video single for “All Love Is Lost” off the Bloodlust album, Ice-T features SVU co-star Kelli Giddish, who also plays Det. Rollins on the show. Co-starring in tonight’s performance was Hatebreed vocalist Jamey Jasta with his side project “Jasta”, with a surprise performance by former Killswitch Engage front man Howard Jones. Ice-T and Body Count appeared at The Marquee Theater in Tempe, AZ before shipping off on their European tour to support their latest album.

Today is a day that myself, and thousands of other music fans across the world have been waiting for. Which of coarse is Bonnaroo Announcement Day. It is almost a holiday to some like me. I personally worked 3 extra shifts at my job just to have this day off. And, was it worth it? Yes it was. Here is the complete Lineup that we all have been waiting on and below are a few reasons I think that you should venture to the farm this summer.
I tried on both my ipod and my computer to open the live video feed on Bonnaroo’s Youtube Channel with no luck. So many people were trying to watch at the same time. During one point the view counter was at 18,000 people watching live. I kept having the video freeze and stop working. After refreshing for the first 10 minutes the video wouldn’t work for me at all. That had a lot of people had posting some negative comments. It is supposed to be fun, and to me it was.
I worked out the problems and got the video going again. As I tuned in they were reading some of the first announcements live : Passion Pit, Of Monsters, Of Men were read off by Weird AL. Then a personal Bonnaroo favorite of mine Trombone Shorty came on the screen live to announce that he would be at Bonnaroo 2013.
After some various random Bonnaroo footage, a lady named Amy and her adorable son announced Billy Idol and another band I didn’t reconize the name for. Weird Al came back on screen to announce Mumford and Sons, which was a solid add. Next to be announced was Grizzly Bear, Foals, Walk The Moon, Wild Nothing, Deap Vally, Killer Mike and Japandroids were on a list that came out of a colorful donkey pinatas ass. Portugal. The Man, made a guest appearance and played ” So American ” which sounded great. I have yet to get to see them live this was a cool surprise for me.
Portugal. The Man was a awesome addition to this party, and I made it a party. This is one of the best days of the year for me. I learn so much about music, myself and just life in general from being away from normal life for a few days in the summer. Bonnaroo gives me that and that means the world to me. If you have never been, you really should consider going it is nothing short of AMAZING. My favorite thing about Bonnaroo is all the artist and people I am grateful to have seen and met that other than here, I never would of had to the chance to. It’s priceless.
So I was having a lot of fun watching this whole thing, to me anticipation makes things better sometimes. Goofy skits ensued and more artist were announced Beach House, Gaslight Anthem, Local Natives, Dirty Projectors, Baroness, The Vaccines, Dwight Yokam, and Death Grips rounded out that set. R.Kelly was the next big announcement. I’m not sure on this one, the topic is being widely debated. I know R. Kelly takes a lot of heat in the media. His last tour got great reviews and he is a talented writer and performer. Should be interesting to say the least. It is either gonna be really good, or really bad which do you think?
Paul Mccartney, was a major addition to the lineup. Some of the others were Purity Ring, Cat Power, The Wu Tang Clan, Björk and ZZ Top which were all big names to be added. I have never got to see Wu Tang and they will be a set I won’t miss. Next to be announced on the show were Matt and Kim, Tame Impala, Action Bronson, Kendrick Lamar, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, and Pretty Lights were some of the bigger artist that were announced to close out the show. But there was one more major artist for 2013…. Weird AL Yankovich, which was felt across the world. One word Major.
They closed out the show with Weird Al playing a song with Portugal. The Man. The show was fun I will see everyone at the farm this summer. Until then here are some of my personal favorite 2013 Bonnaroo Artist picks, all videos shot by me over the years.
5. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers they are going to play a great set because thats what Tom Petty does. They are known for their live shows, go see this one.
4. Baroness, these guys blew me away last time I saw them live. They are what a good rock show is about. They are going to tear shit up at Bonnaroo. If you go don’t miss them.
3. NAS is incredible live, Nas does not disappoint he stays sharp.It will be just him, a mic, you and The DJ. What true Rap is all about, come out and see Nas. One of the best rappers of all time.
2. St. Vincent and David Bryne, I owe finding out about St. Vincent to Bonnaroo. I saw her back in 09 and she was incredible. I have been hooked since. Last year was one of my favorite performances of the weekend, I can’t wait for this year.
1. Killer Mike is tremendously underrated, I went to his show a while back. Dude Kills it, hence the name. I really like his lyrics, songs, and how can you not like a song about Wrestling Star Ric Flair? Go Check out Killer Mike this summer.

‘Twas mid-November 2011. I had finally come to terms with the morbid fact that I, Jakob Ross, would be forced to move to Grovetown, Georgia, which (unless you’ve not read my more recent articles) you probably know by now. Around this time I had made the decision to do the one thing that would make the move worth it. I’m not talking about humidity, rednecks, or seeing more back sweaters than real sweaters. I’m talking about the legendary Bonnaroo festival which takes place annually in Manchester, Tennessee.
At first, it was sort of a joke. Then came the lineup announcement, and both my dad and I knew this would be maybe our only chance to hit a world-famous music festival before I’m off to college and he’s off to his 40s. With Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Phish handling head-lining duties, I knew that missing this festival would be the biggest mistake of my life. Come February, our wristbands were purchased and the official countdown could begin.
Fast-forward to the beginning days of June 2012. My dad made the decision to pick up a carpooler outside of Atlanta and the countdown was in the single digits. Finally, on Thursday June 7 and after my dad got home from work, we were off. We set sail on the mighty Oceanus Interstatus and were starving for delicious servings (17 to be exact) of amazing bands. They were the best of times, they were the worst of times. Or something.
Chapter 1: Thursday Night
We parked at around 9:30 PM started setting up our tents. Unfortunately there was not enough room to fit both our tent and our guest’s tent. And our car didn’t have enough power for us to blow up our air mattress. So, we set up our tent a bit farther away, decided to sleep on a deflated mattress, and pushed on. At about 11 PM we went into Centeroo (where all the stages are) in hopes of catching Alabama Shakes at This Tent. Unfortunately, the crowd was so big that there was no way we could’ve seen anything. Same goes for Big Gigantic at That Tent and MiMosa at The Other Tent.
Downtrodden and after a slice of pizza, we made our way back to camp to get the best night’s sleep we could hope to get at a festival with no curfews and with bands going all night long. I knew I would feel it the enthusiasm the next morning. Just needed some well-deserved and well-needed R&R.
Chapter 2: Friday Morning
Although we had our alarm set for 10 AM, we quickly learned that sleeping in past 8 is nigh impossible. So, with a good three hours or so to kill until our first act of the festival, The Kooks, we hung out. Got to talk to our neighbors and I even got to meet BeezNutz, a member of the St. Louis chapter of the CC Family.
After a major family-related setback that jeopardized our stay at Bonnaroo, we sorted through it and prepared to make another journey into Centeroo. We explored our general area (thankfully we were close to the port-a-potties) and made good use of the free wash area, which was great for teeth-brushing, shaving, hand-washing, etc. At 10:30 AM (our car was still adjusted to Eastern Time so I thought it was 11:30) we made our way second voyage to Centeroo to catch 2nd wave Britpop band The Kooks at Which Stage.
Chapter 3: The Kooks and the Comedy Theatre
After an hour and 45 minutes of waiting (again, blaming the car here) The Kooks graced the stage to bring their contagiously catchy brand of happiness and smiles to the crowd that was gathered to watch. They played what I’m pretty sure were quite a few of their hits: Is It Me?, She Moves Her Own Way, Ooh La, Junk of the Heart (Happy), and Naive. Their set was pretty fun to watch, actually. I’m not the biggest Kooks fan in the world, but they are great when it comes to summertime music, especially a sunny Friday afternoon at Bonnaroo. In terms of Britpop I’d most likely compare them to Pulp more than I would to Oasis or Blur, mostly because of the cheeriness among the band and the feel of the music.
After their set ended and we grabbed some lunch, we headed over to the comedy tent to try and grab some tickets to catch Aziz Ansari. To get into a comedy show you have to grab tickets which they hand out 2 hours in advance. And for some reason I didn’t expect the line to stretch out to 2000 people. After deciding that it’s not worth it, we walked around to see what else was going on (there’s ALWAYS something going on.)
Chapter 4: SOJA
Celebrating a successful Thursday night set, Virginia-based reggae band SOJA, who have some of the nattiest dreads I’ve ever seen on white people, hit the Solar Stage, a solar-powered mini-stage that hosts environmentally conscious bands and artists that play some songs and do a Q&A session.
At about 2:05 the eight-piece came out and put on a very four-song set, interspersed with questions curated by…. some dude. I was sorta hoping it would be an audience participation sort of thing where we could ask the questions. I really wanted to ask Jacob Hemphill how high he was at that moment, on a scale of 1 to Snoop Dogg.
Either way, it was great to see them break into acoustic version of songs such as Strength to Survive and Nothing Ever Changes. Based on the interview they seem like legitimately cool dudes and I’m glad we got to check out their set. And with that we made our way to see a last-minute addition to the Ross Duo’s Official Bonnaroo schedule: Fitz and the Tantrums.
Chapter 5: Fitz and the Tantrums & St. Vincent
Sometimes fate can be great. Fitz and the Tantrums just so happened to be playing That Tent, which would be followed in the same tent by St. Vincent, one of my must-see artists of Bonnaroo.
This was my first time in one of the tents, so discovering that the ground was sand was quite the surprise. This would mean that if the crowd got crazy, a huge sand cloud would form and make its way into the lungs of the hundreds of people gathered to see whichever band. It’s already pretty dusty at the farm, so whoever thought it was a good idea to put sand on the ground was a moron. But that’s just my opinion.
At about 5, neo-soul group Fitz and the Tantrums appeared on stage to many adoring fans. And despite what Reverend Justito might say, they put on a fantastic show. The music is simple enough for most people to get and fun enough for most people to dance to. They even through in their covers of Steady As She Goes and Sweet Dreams Are Made of This, making both songs way cheerier than they actually are.
Singers Michael Fitzpatrick and Noelle Scaggs have a great chemistry and seem to play characters during their songs which reflect their attitude. Sometimes they’ll get up in each others faces West Side Story style and other times they’ll smile at each other and dance. That is only a part of what makes them so great live. Add in the insane amount of audience participation (my hands were sore from clapping along) and you’ve got a Fitz and the Tantrums show. They ended their set with their career-starting hit MoneyGrabber and even pulled a Slipknot by having the ground crouch to the ground and jump up at the song’s climax.

After Fitz ended, we grabbed some food and took a quick bathroom break before preparing to have our faces melted off by St. Vincent. I made my way into the crowd because I knew this would be a show I wouldn’t want to miss.
Annie Clark is to women what Dave Grohl is to men. She is an astoundingly talented musician, singer, songwriter, and just all-around cool person. Her 17-song 75-minute no-holds-barred set at Bonnaroo showcased her talents, both on her axe and on her vocal chords. She played mostly songs from her stellar 2011 record Stranger Mercy, but broke out a couple songs from her other records Actor and Marry Me.
One thing you notice about Annie Clark is her guitar playing. The guitar is almost an extra appendage for her; to see her perform without it would be like seeing the drummer of Def Leppard lose his other arm. And she is full of emotion, too. At times she is ominous and borderline scary, kind of like Winona Rider in Beetlejuice; other times she is happy and cute, kind of like Winona Rider in Heathers. (Those will be the only Winona Rider comparisons because those are the only movies with her I’ve seen.) Couple that with the “How did she make her guitar sound like that?” effect that benefited Jimi Hendrix, Kevin Shields, and Tom Morello, and you’ve got a face-melting show from an insanely talented person. Long live Annie Clark.

Chapter 6: Radiohead and Major Lazer
After St. Vincent’s glorious set, we headed over to the What Stage to catch the first headliner of the festival, Radiohead. Earlier this year, I didn’t care much at all about Radiohead, but I’ve slowly been turned onto them after listening to more of their music and watching their more recent live performances. And what can I say? Radiohead absolutely delivered, and then some.
The set was devoted songs from 2011’s The King of Limbs and 2007’s In Rainbows without any doubt. Almost half the set, actually, was from those two albums. Other bits and pieces from Hail to the Thief, Amnesiac, Kid A, and OK Computer were scattered throughout, as well as the new tracks Identikit and Daily Mail.
The lights display for Radiohead is really what makes their show so fantastic. As the drum-and-bass rhythms reach an epic climax, the screen lights up brighter and brighter. There were even eight or so little screens that moved around above Thom and Co.
Say what you will about their music, especially their more recent music, but Radiohead are a phenomenal live band, and I’m glad I got to see them once.

After the longest Radiohead show of the year ended (this is a fact), we headed over to This Tent to catch dubstep/electronic/reggae duo Major Lazer and then make our way into the crowd for Umphrey’s McGee’s late night set.
Electronica and reggae were two things I never thought would go together, but Major Lazer makes it work so perfectly well. DJs Diplo and Scratch played music for everybody to dance to, from the fat men to the topless women they were begging to see.
Audience participation is a big part of their show, they even brought a guy on stage and had their dancers give him the Major Lazer treatment, whatever that is. Their set was a lot of fun, but whoever the hype man is, he is wicked obnoxious. Just saying.
Chapter 7: Umphreaks’ Delight
Umphrey’s McGee are a band that, to be honest, I hadn’t heard much of. But per the recommendation of CC family members, we made the decision to stick around until 4 in the morning to catch a super-special late night Umphrey’s McGee set. And you know what, we had a lot of fun!
20 minutes had passed since they were supposed to take the stage, and nothing had happened. The stage was set up and everything was tuned. Then, the lights went down and Umphrey’s came out and blew the roof off This Tent.
Umphrey’s opened up with Gurgle which led right into 40’s Theme, the latter of which featured a tease One Nation Under A Groove by Funkadelic. Then they went into Plunger which led right into The Floor. Afterwards they played Pay the Snucka with a Stranglehold tease, which jammed on into the Triple Wide which eventually led back into Pay the Snucka, this time with a Bulls on Parade tease.
Umphrey’s played like absolute maniacs. The two guitarists are amazing at what they do, and watching them do the overhand finger-tapping was insane. If I passed these people on the street, I would NEVER in a million years think “That guy must be an insane guitar player.”
At around 4, Umphrey’s invited up the special guest that everyone was speculating about: Big Gigantic. The saxophone player did a sax solo as the members of UM left the stage. Big Gigantic did a jam before Umphrey’s came back on and did a second set that lasted til 6 in the morning!
As cool as it would have been to say that I was there, I just couldn’t stay up that long. So we left after Big Gigantic came on got 3 hours of sleep.

Quite a successful day if I do say so myself. I wasn’t disappointed at all by any band I saw. And I could say that I got 3 hours of sleep at Bonnaroo! Because seriously, you’re not gonna sleep in after 8 in the morning. Trust me.
As always the lineup for the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester Tennessee is nothing short of impressive. Headlined by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead and Phish, the festival is set to take place June 7th-10th, 2012. Other highlights on the bill include Alice Cooper, St. Vincent and a reunited Ben Folds Five.
With the first two price levels already sold out, you best get your tickets soon as this annual event almost always sells out. Sasquatchis one of Washington’s most widely regarded music festivals. Held annually at the beautiful Gorge Amphitheater, Sasquatch is known for hosting big name acts like Jane’s Addiction, Kings of Leon, Bjork, and Flaming Lips. Well this year, they’ve got a treat for you.

BEST OF THE BEST: Well it appears that Jack White will be making his solo US debut here at Sasquatch a month after the release of his debut solo album. That is certainly something to watch for.
With Beck, you should always expect the unexpected, so whatever he does will most likely be some sort of garage-punk/funky-pop weirdness explosion.
The self-described “greatest band in the world” Tenacious D will be returning to the stage after five long years, to coincide with the release of their new album.
Girl Talk is a mashup artist that can combine everything from War Pigs, to Teach Me How to Dougie, to 99 Problems, all without being sued.
Portlandia, a show led by Wild Flag’s Carrie Brownstein (who will also play the festival with that group) and SNL’s Fred Armisen. It’s an amazingly funny and amazingly bizarre sketch comedy show that sold out crowds across the US when they brought it to the stage. Definitely something to see if you watch the show.
If you’re looking to relax after a long day’s festival, Explosions in the Sky should help (not Bon Iver). This post-rock emotional explosion of instrumental beauty is like a symphony of guitars that will put you to sleep in the best sense of the word.
Childish Gambino, or as Community fans know him Donald Glover, is a brilliant lyricist and deliverer of rap music. He’s also wicked funny. So whether he does something comedic or something serious, it should be brilliant.
Blitzen Trapper are Americana-folk at its best. With Sub Pop signing more folk bands like Fleet Foxes, Blitzen Trapper hopped on the first train out of Portland to play magnificent folksy music. It’ll be like a portal to another world, a world where all you should care about is not getting anyone’s vomit on your shoes.

There is the famous line in Pulp Fiction when Jules shares with Vincent that his gal is a vegetarian so that pretty much makes him a vegetarian. If you replace the word vegetarian with Tori Amos fan, you now know why you are reading this review. This weekend was my 11th and 12th all expense paid trip to Toriland. I have nothing but respect for Tori Amos, but if my wife and I ever broke up, I would no doubt hate her as I can’t even describe how many hours of my life have been spent being forced to listen to her music. With the last Tori experience leaving a less than stellar taste in my mouth (Greek Theatre Los Angeles – July 2009) I had hoped by agreeing to commit to two nights long before Goldenvoice announced some killer punk shows out in Santa Monica that I had not made the wrong choice.
The opener for both nights was a gentleman named Thomas Dybdahl. Mr. Dybdahl was not terrible, but I found myself each night preferring his stage banter over his songs. While he did have help from someone on what appeared to be a Weissenborn, when it’s just you and a guitar you need to be really something special. Having seen many of these types open for Amos over the years, Dybdahl was far from memorable. Nothing against him and his music, I just would have preferred someone a bit more dynamic.
As we reported in our recap of night one, Amos knew it was Saturday night in Los Angeles and rocked the historic vaudeville theatre hard. I assumed Sunday night would be much mellow and where I was correct not even I could imagine what she had up her sleeve.
The evening started the exact same way as night one. Apollon Musagète kicked the set off with their stringed madness before Tori joined in on the fun with “Shattering Sea.” After rocking “God/Running Up That Hill” and “Suede” for the second consecutive night, things began to get very interesting. It took my wife almost two minutes to place the rare Little Earthquakes B-side “Ode To The Banana King” and I am pretty sure I had never heard this song before. With the mood now set that anything could happen, it was clear we were in for a once in a lifetime show.
Where Saturday had the “hits” Sunday was all about making a message with the music. “Fearlessness and “Maybe California” sounded great with the strings. As far as the new material from her album Night of Huters goes, the best song I saw over these two nights was Star Whisperer. On a structural level, it reminded me a lot of my favorite band Phish. The tempo changes and song within a song feel had me craving some parking lot grilled cheese and a good old fashion wook bust.
As great as the strings are, the highlights of the night was when Amos was alone with her piano. If “Ode To The Banana King” wasn’t a big enough treat we were fortunate enough to hear solo takes on the rare gems “Sister Janet” and performed for only the fifth time “Apollo’s Frock.” That however was just the tip of the ice berg.
With a fat drunk cow screaming at the top of her lungs a few rows in front of us (as I mentioned in the Saturday recap, these shows had some of the rudest Tori fans I have ever encountered) Tori warned us to brace ourselves. It was then that for the first time ever that she busted out the Y Kant Tori Read track “On The Boundary.” No joke, when folks tweeting the setlist for the incredible fan run website Undented, many thought it was a practical joke. But as you can see below, it was no joke as Amos reworked the number into a beautiful haunting song that hit me deep in my soul.
Even when not busting out rare gems, Amos was kicking all kinds of backside. “Leather” sounded great and it’s always fun when Tori grabs her ass up on stage. I was most impressed with the re-working of “Hey Jupiter.” Typically if Amos is the change a songs tempo, it’s for the slower. With the quartet behind her, “Hey Jupiter” had a much jazzier upbeat feel. Dare I say I enjoy the re-worked version better than the original?
The show closed with a lengthy encore that went a few minutes past the venues 11pm curfew. Some of the better points of the encore were the holiday flavored “Holly, Ivy and Rose” and one of my favorite Amos rockers “Big Wheel.”
In closing, while I was bummed I had agreed to do the right thing and be a good husband I am glad I did. Both shows were some of the best I have ever seen Tori perform. From a rocking night one to a once in a lifetime performance on night two, seeing Amos recreate her classics with a string quartet was truly special. If she brings this tour back to the states in 2012, there will be no doubt that I will be back for yet another round.

A major reason I started concertconfessions.com was my disgust of journalists from major media outlets. I hated old and out of touch professionals who were paid to see a show, only to trash and miss-represent an artist due to their failure to connect. Not knowing over half the bands on the inaugural Cool Tour, I was hesitant to accept an offer for a free ticket/full access press credential. Fearful of becoming everything I despised, I decided to accept the offer because at the end of the day, I love music and I love to discover artists who have yet to tickle my ear drums. So I headed into Hollywood excited for another day long metal show at the world famous Palladium.
War of Ages
The show kicked off at 5pm sharp with a set from Erie, PA Christian Metalcore masters, War of Ages. The band made the most of their 25 minute set by bashing out five songs and instantly connecting with the young crowd. Front man Leroy Hamp was the fist of many to get the crowd to form a large circle pit upon the venue’s massive floor. Swirling for the set closing “All Consuming Fire,” War of Ages did an outstanding job setting the pace for a long night of music.
I feel bad for the Cancer Bats. I had seen the crazy Canadians once before, and enjoyed their frantic set as part of the 2008 Taste of Chaos tour. On this particular night, they felt like the odd man out. Are they rock, are they metal, or perhaps punk? I’m not sure and I feel most of the crowd did not know what to make of them either. That didn’t stop the band from giving it their all, and working hard to win the crowd over. Knowing that the crowd was unfamiliar with their unique form of north of the border rock, the highlight of the set came when the band covered the Beastie Boys classic “Sabotage.” All in all, a solid set from the four piece act. Even if two or three kids were won over as fans, the Cancer Bats Saturday afternoon set was a success.
Walking into the show, I had never heard a song by Architects. An hour after their set, they got my broke ass to shell out $5 for one of their records. Here was this band, who was heavy, and yet had some intricate breakdowns that were reminiscent of Phish. Well, if Phish sounded like Dillinger Escape Plan’s British cousin. Anyways, the band bashed the crowd’s brains in with songs like “Numbers Count For Nothing” and “Early Grave,” making a fan of me and many more in the process.
The Acacia Strain
I have heard the name The Acacia Strain for years. I know one song from a comp record I played once or twice, but my knowledge ends there. I enjoyed the bands brief set of metal/death/masshole-core, but what won me over more than the music was their mouths. Well, mainly front man Vincent Bennett’s mouth. He pulled the classic “I have a mic and you don’t” line when battling some haters. He then invited them to suck his cock. Bennett joked about how his band has made a career out of providing opening set services to every band on the planet. He made sure to point out that his band was uglier than “pretty” tourmates, Blessthefall. Much like Jered Leto, he acted as a cheerleader mid-song encouraging the fat and lazy crowd to move. I stopped by the merch table to see if Bennett had any form of solo spoken word record, I was that entertained. As you can imagine, I was denied. I do hope that I get to catch these guys open for someone in the near future, because The Acacia Strain are a highly entertaining live band.
Well, The Acacia Strain got it right; these boys are pretty. It basically comes down to this: If I was a 17 year old girl, I would probably love this band. More Michael W. Smith than Metallica, The band is designed for underage girls who love Jesus, Hello Kitty and boys dressed for a day at the yacht club. Now, you may say it’s not fair to make judgements based on looks, but the music itself was simple, boring and lacked originality. It’s their thing and it seems to works for the female Hot Topic crowd. You didn’t win my respect, but I have to assume you didn’t start your “we’re Christians but don’t call us a Christian” band for me.
Between The Buried And Me
I can’t name a single song by BTBAM. Okay, that’s a lie. They have a song called “Alaska,” but I couldn’t tell you if they played it. I can’t name a single member of the band. That’s also a lie but only because I heard two male fans clearly in love with guitar player Dustie Waring screaming out for his attention during soundcheck. I can’t even name a single album by the Raleigh, NC band. Yes, that too is a lie, because “Alaska” is also the title track to their third release. Despite these short-coming, I am Between The Buried And Me’s biggest fan. I think the band performed a total of four songs over their 45 minutes set and managed to hold my undivided attention the entire time. The songs are elaborate and take the listener on long voyages over mountains, deep into valleys and back up again just in time for a sonic sunset. This is a band who could obliterate Ozzfest, bash bonged out brains at Bonnaroo and please the pansies over at Pitchfork. For the first time all day, I was not ready for a band to leave the stage. I wanted more, I needed more. When you look up epic in the dictionary, it instructs you to see Between The Buried And Me. I promise we will cross paths again with these metal masters. After all, I am their biggest fan.
I own two Underoath albums and this was my second Underoath show. I still can’t make my mind up as to whether I like them or not. Yes, Underoath sounds fierce and rocks hard live. Yet, when they come up on random on my iPod, I find myself skipping over them. Yes, they unleash a harsh sonic attack on a young and eager crowd. Yet, no mater how hard try, I can never connect with the band because at the end of the day the whole thing feels fake and contrived.
Despite my feelings, the band (who does not have any remaining original members) did a fine job of performing songs that have spanned their career. They even found time to sneak in two new songs from a record they hope drop sometime this fall. Fans went crazy for songs like “Writing On The Walls” and “ Anyone Can Dig A Hole But It Takes A Real Man To Call It Home.”
What killed the set for me was the way the band ended their set. I was aware walking into the show that the six piece group were Christians.. Before closing with “In Regards To Myself,” front man Spencer Chamberlain just had to take a moment and share that the bands believed in Jesus Christ. They also made sure to state that it was a choice, all while insisting they were not forcing it down our throats. However, by making the statement, they succeeded at gagging us with their beliefs. We know you love Jesus, now just shut up and rock.
As I Lay Dying
After a day in which I witnessed a lot of new music, the payoff was a headline set by one of my favorite metal bands to emerge over the last decade, As I Lay Dying. My sixth show from the group, I was fired up to check out the five piece band currently touring in support of their brand new record The Powerless Rise. The lights went down on the Palladium for the final time on this particular evening and the group started things on a high note with “94 Hours.” The crowd went nuts as duel axe-men Nick Hipa and Phil Sgrosso criss-crossed the stage while cranking out chord after chord.
The band drew heavily from their latest release during the 50 minute set. “Beyond Our Suffering” “Anodyne Sea” and “Vacancy” all killed. One thing that is very impressive with As I Lay Dying’s live show is vocalist Tim Lambesis. Many metal singers can’t come close to sounding as good live as they do in the studio. In person, Tim sounds better than on recorded media.
The band wrapped up the night with a trip through their back catalogue. They started with a nasty version of “Nothing Left.” From there the band pleased the crowd with the Shadows Are Security track “Through Struggle.” The energy level inside the old ballroom was the highest it had been all day and the band made sure to channel that energy for the final number. Already past curfew, the band made some happy-birthday wishes before splitting the crowd in two for a celebratory wall of death. It quickly became obvious to all in attendance, there was no safe place to hide. Once the crowd surged towards each other, chaos ensued. For an all day metal show it was the perfect conclusion. While fans chanted for one more song, the lights came up and security began to force the crowd out of the exit doors.
