Gojira and Oni: Ventura Theater – Ventura, Ca 8/2/17

French progressive metal band Gojira released their newest album Magma in 2016. Since then, they have been actively touring for the album. On this tour, they made a surprise stop in Ventura County in Southern California.  On this tour, they brought with them Oni and Pallbearer. Even when Oni came on stage, the venue was just under halfway full since it was a Wednesday.

Oni came out and started delivering their signature progressive metal sound that made them who they are. With guitarists Brandon White and Martin Andres doing twin lead guitar solos and finger-tapping giving their music a very interesting sound. Another very distinct sound they had to their music was the use of a xylophone/xylosynth from John DeAngelis. The way their music blends, it’s something you have to hear to believe. The music a long with the energetic performance made Oni for a great opening band. Since they were the opening band, they had a rather short set and it seemes to be over just as soon as they had started. Regardless, the audience enjoyed Oni which is what matters in the end.

Gojira was the highlight of the night with the venue’s bottom floor packed. The stage was already set up with an amazing display of lights and fog cannons. The lights went out and drummer Mario Duplantier went on stage to his drum kit and started the intro to Only Pain from the new album and the rest of the band members came out to play the song. The crowd went wild as fog cannons shot out fog towards the crowd and Gojira played the opening song with precision to the album including the band’s signature pick-squeal sound which sounds like a “chewww” every time guitarist and frontman Joe Duplantier did his pick slide on his guitar. The band immediately got a huge response from a loud audience as well as a mosh pit forming right away right on front of the band. The Heaviest Matter of the Universe was next from their famed From Mars to Sirius album and it proved to be a fast and heavy track with Duplantier’s powerful screaming vocals. Gojira brought out some more new tunes from the newest Magma album and so they played new tracks like Stranded, The Cell, and Silvera which was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 59th annual Grammy Awards. Gojira couldn’t possible forget about their classic catalog of songs so of course they had to play something for the old school fans. The fans went nuts when Duplantier played the familiar intro to the band’s most famous song, Flying Whales. The pits went crazy and fans sang along to the song. Gojira played another hit Toxic Garbage Island further showcasing their lyrics about the environment, life, death, and nature. After the song, brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier displayed their musicianship by switching instruments for a quick jam. Gojira played Oroborus and left the stage. All the lights were off, but the crowd didn’t seem to budge and chanted the band’s name. Surely enough, Gojira came back out and performed the first encore, Vacuity. Gojira talked a little bit about being a support act for Metallica on their current tour and even played snippets of Metallica songs. Now that it was time for the show to come to an end, Gojira performed a special song. They played a cover of Territory originally by Brazilian thrash metal band, Sepultura. The audience went wild with a huge mosh pit forming on the floor. Gojira wrapped up the show and thanked the audience for coming out before leaving the stage for the final time.

Mastodon and Gojira: Fox Theater – Pomona, Ca – 10/17/14

Progressive metal bands Mastodon and Gojira once again teamed up for another tour across the USA as they did earlier this year. Mastodon was out to support the release of their new album, Once More ‘Round the Sun which was released on June 24, 2014. Gojira was on the final trek of supporting their newest release, L’Enfant Sauvage (French for “The Wild Child) which was released in 2012. Both bands have a huge following in the states so having both bands together is a dream tour for many people. The Fox Theater in Pomona, California was in for a real treat.

The lights turned off and the stage was lit only purple strobe lights. It was time for the progressive metal band from France to take the stage and start things off with sheer animosity by playing the first track from the L’Enfant Sauvage album, Explosia. Right from the start, Gojira wasn’t messing around and all 4 members performed nicely and were constantly moving around. The crowd was on their feet whether they were jumping, moshing, or crowd surfing. Gojira played a vast array of songs from their catalog which made a nice mix of old and new material. Not a single song failed to impress or keep the crowd from being energized even when Gojira’s lyrics are environmental-themed. It’s the sound of the music that gets everyone moving. When Gojira finished, they thanked us for coming out and promised to come back not only to play for us again, but return with a new album as well.

Mastodon is a well-known band among the metal community. With them being around since 2000, they have lots to offer musically and continue to do so with the release of Once More ‘Round the Sun. Their sound has evolved over time with at first having a sludge metal sound and have now become a full-on progressive metal band. Both old and new fans of Mastodon gathered at the now packed Fox Theater for the headlining band hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. Mastodon opened with the first track from the new album called, Tread Lightly. Their setlist was a good mix of old and new songs and even played a song from their first album which they don’t do too often these days. Guitarist Brent Hinds is always entertaining to watch. As a backup vocalist, he’s known for his screeching voice and the variety of funny faces he does while doing so. Drummer Brann Dailor was amazing and was on point on the drums as always even when lending his voice as the lead vocalist on some songs. Mastodon ended the night with the song Blood and Thunder which is their most famous song and is also one of the best metal songs to be written. Mastodon and Gojira are two powerhouse metal bands that will bring crowds together like one big happy family which is one of the best feelings at any concert.

Lamb of God Cancel 2012 North American Tour

Lamb of God Cancel 2012 North American Tour

We were pumped earlier this year when we shared with you dates on the upcoming Lamb of God/Dethklok/Gojira North American tour. We are now sad to share with you that the tour has been cancelled due to Lamb of God front man Randy Blythe’s bogus imprisonment.

For those of you not aware, Blythe was arrested in the Czech Republic last month and charged with manslaughter from the accidental death of a fan at a Lamb of God show a few years ago.  You can read the statement about the cancellation from the band down below:

Due to the continued incarceration of LAMB OF GOD singer Randy Blythe in the Czech Republic, the band’s co-headline tour with Dethklok scheduled to begin August 1st in Seattle is being cancelled. The band regrets the decision but the uncertainty of Randy’s release makes it impossible to carry on with the tour. Upon Randy’s release, it is the band’s intention to rebook a tour in the fall and at this time the band fully intends to participate in the Mayhem Cruise in December.

LAMB OF GOD wishes to thank Dethklok, Adult Swim and Gojira for their support and patience as well as all of the promoters who had dates on the tour. Last but certainly not least, the band thanks all of the fans who bought tickets for the tour and who have been supportive of Randy and the band over the last month that Randy has been held in Prague. Without the fans, there is no LAMB OF GOD.

From all of us at Concert Confessions we wish Randy the best of luck and send good energy out in the world that he is cleared of these bogus charges ASAP.
